I have it, and it's a beauty.  Not as dramatic as some, but there's a warm glow to it that's irresistible.  I've only listened to it twice, so there's the possibility I'll change my mind with time.

Don, thanks for the review, I may just get it.   :)

Dave, avoid the Finzi on Chandos unless you really want the Violin Concerto, which is far better than its pairing. Go for Tim Hugh's account of the Cello Concerto on Naxos. ;)

Mark - thanks - I already have the Cello Concerto w/ Hugh on Naxos (excellent), but apparently the other works on those two CDs had no other ´overlaps´, and I was interested in the Violin Concerto w/ Tasman Little (really have like her in other repertoire); I´ll just keep that one on my list & look for other options.  Dave

Oh, but that looks toothsome!

Karl - great review; plenty of music w/ 2 CDs, and cheap!  Not sure that I can pass up this set!  ;D  Dave

If it's the Violin Concerto you want, Dave (and believe me, you DO want it), then this is the CD you want. I've linked to it on .co.uk, but I'm sure you'll find it on .com ;)

The Schubert is a given — it's the Spohr I'm most interested in hearing after reading about it in the liner notes for Archibudelli's Brahms sextets.

I have the Spohr on Lp, and it's delightful.

Mark - thanks again for the recommendation - looks like Chandos has put the Finzi Violin Concerto w/ Tasman Little on both of those discs (did not do any thorough checking though) - will add to my ´wish list´ - Dave  :)

Wilhelm, thanks for the heads-up about that Ries CD. I bought the first in the series and intended to keep an eye open for more. :)

Which label is the Bizet on, please?

I'm considering on buying those:

I highly recommend it. I like it much more better than the Price/Kollo/Solti recording. HVK was a great opera conductor and he brings all the beauty of the score out in this one. The recording is in excellent mono sound as is typical of mid-late fifties EMI.

I was also considering Ariadne with Kempe/Janowitz, but that seems to be out of print. At the moment HVK is my first choice. I was thinking about the sound quality, but from the samples i've heard it sounds good.

Thanks for this - most helpful. :)

Might be going onto my wishlist - Batiz works wonders with Saint-Saens' Third Symphony (also on ASV), so I expect good things from this.

Wilhelm, I can recommend the Grechaninov without a moment's hesitation. A truly wonderful disc. :)

Is it true that the horrible track splitting on the 5th and 6th symphonies (others too, but it was worst for those) has been changed? I couldn't get a single impression of structure from those due to the horrible and intangibly short "cells".

Yes the HVK sound is excellent. There is absolutely no conjestion or distortion or any sort in the loud passages. I am not a big Schwarzkopf fan but this one (along with the role of the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier - also with HVK) are stunning. She just exudes feminism here. HVK was a unique opera conductor. He extracts great drama, constrast, and continuity while keeping the BEAUTY of the score above all else. Some hate that approach but if you are used to some of the over-the-top approaches you will find HVK's approach very invigorating. If you like this one also consider his Meistersinger.

Not sure since I bought these as separate CDs. I don't think Simpson wrote 11 symphonies, he wrote one symphony 11 times. If you want a sample send me a PM and I'll upload one or more for you to check out.

Oh, I already have several CDs, but it would be marginally cheaper and more space-saving to complete the collection by buying the box. Having no.6 in less than 13 tracks would be a big plus too -_- One Amazon review claims that they fixed this from the previous single CD release, but I don't know why they did it in the first place.
