I'm sorely tempted to add this one to my Franz Schmidt collection:

I already have 2 versions of the oratorio and a few of the symphony, including a copy a friend made me (from youtube) of the Moralt 4th. Moralt's version easily sweeps the board as far as I'm concerned. Mono sound, but good quality (recorded in Vienna's Musikverein). This disc boasts a sound restoration by Lani Spahr - definitely an incentive when it comes to older recordings. As for the Book with Seven Seals, it's a 1962 stereo recording. Sound snippets hint at a terrific performance by Julius Patzak.

Definitely on my list now!
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

I purchased vol. 1 maybe 20 years ago. Never thought a vol. 2 would appear. I recall the interpretation as being relatively mainstream and rather sympathetic.

Any so-called free choice is only a choice between the available options.

Any opinions on this release?
It is becoming my favorite cycle of Haydn's sonatas. There is real study, élan and knowledge in the playing, with beautiful sound (and nice bass). I was looking for a cycle with modern piano and think I found it with this package.

Thanks. I pulled the trigger on it the other day.

It's just too difficult to buy, and sometimes he can sound a bit too metronomic for me in the first three suites.

I must try to find vol. one again. Is it vol. one or vol. two which is too difficult to buy?
I suppose vol. two will differ much from vol. one because of the long interval between them.

Good point. Vol 2 is hard to buy -- I can see it here, but they don't seem to ship to the UK. And being Swiss, it's expensive.

I agree, it does seem hopeless. I was momentarily confused because I instinctively thought it would be available for download.

It's a shame because I find myself really enjoying his second suite this evening - I was wrong to say he can be metronomic. I've just sent an email to someone I know in Switzerland to see if he can help.

@prémont

 Good afternoon

Thank you for your message.

We don't have the CD you're looking for in stock anymore. We used to order it from Mr. Zeller himself, but he does not have any left, unfortunately. And it's not available anywhere else.

Kind regards

Thank you @Mandryka. We'll have to await a re-release and, in the meantime, attempt to locate a second hand item.

It's probably of no use to write to him.

Although Bach is one of my most listened-to composers, I must admit to not having delved that much into his vocal religious works. It's honestly not a favorite genre of mine, so getting a complete set of the cantatas seems like a massive overkill. A set of digestible highlights seems like the best option, certainly for now at least, so which of these two is the better one? The Gardiner set obviously has more music (including the masses and passions in the same package), but does it have any notable flaws, or are there any factors that might cause one to prefer Harnoncourt?

Harnoncourt uses boy sopranos which some tolerate, some don't. The soloists are first-rate, and Bach is one of the composers Harnoncourt truly shines in.

I really like Gardiner (I should give one of his CDs a spin, it has been a while) but I don't think he is as spiritual as other conductors, and his approach to Bach is what led to the now infamous article in I think the Times (but it could be the New Yorker) "speed freaks do Bach." The thing is that he is VERY GOOD at Bach and he loves Bach, and you can tell. But the problem is that the discourse is split between a fanatical cult that thinks that his recordings are transformative above everyone else, or people think that his conducting is hot garbage.

Bottom line, please just go to YT and listen for yourself if you don't pay for streaming. Don't blind buy an expensive, big box set.
