"High-quality" how?
i mean that i purchased both the cds of the bach's partitas through onclassical.com. then they gave me the files to download (i suppose automatically). the files were all wavs. so i burned 2 cds with their tracks and then tried the cd on my hi-fi. so the sound was really good, absolutely as they claim hi-fi quality.

Xenophanes

The Fine Arts Quartet at WFMT

Complete Haydn Symphonies--Fischer

Stokowski's Mussorgsky--Bamert

Falla, Three Cornered Hat, Love the Magician--Ansermet

Lethevich

Interesting - a new Brahms cycle from Gardiner has begun. I have yet to hear the Mackerras cycle which I presume this will be compared to...

Is anyone familiar with these recordings?  They just arrived on eMusic (and I see they're available to download on Amazon.com as well).

I have both of them, and they're among the best.  You can download with confidence.

Zhiliang, I have this one with GutiĆ©rrez, which I bought it mostly for the orchestra (and to have another version of the Prokofiev 3, other than Argerich).  The performance is very good--more measured, not as "bat out of hell" as Argerich--and I like the recording, although it is a bit reverberant.

How do you consider the first volume of this series -  performance-wise and sound-wise? The contents look quite intersting

Rubio, the performances are very good--I don't think you'd be disappointed if you like the repertoire--but the sound quality varies, even as good as it probably was for the time.  Personally I have a hard time "listening through" some of the sound on this particular box, more than the subsequent compilations.  Even the following one (1950-1960) is a bit easier on the ears.  But depending on your taste for historical recordings, you may not mind.  There are definitely some interesting things on it, e.g., the Hindemith Symphony in E-flat conducted by the composer, and a good Shostakovich 7th Symphony with Kubelik, among others.

How terrible is the sound quality? Significantly worse than Cortot's EMI set? About the same?

If it were me, I'd go for the Hofmann disc. Kovacevich's Beethoven is decent, but nothing too spectacular IMO.

I heard the Hess recording this morning. It was written for the Queen Mother. 'Nuff said?

I would recommend that you try to hear it before buying.

Hi Bruce,

How is the performance of the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2? Its my favourite Prokofiev piano concerto. Is the sound great too? Thanks for your recomendations.

I recall liking it very much, but I haven't heard it in awhile, to be honest.  The sound, like that for No. 3, is very good but definitely on the reverberant side (IIRC it was recorded in the Concertgebouw).  You may prefer a drier acoustic for Prokofiev, but I didn't mind it.  Now I'm curious...may give it a spin in over the weekend.
