True, but she isn't unattractive either:

So she's a competition winner. I attend our local Chopin Society recitals. They take place in a private home and feature mostly young pianists who have won or come in second or third place in various competitions. Interesting thing: in ten years I've seen maybe twenty pianists and not one--not one! male or female, was unattractive. Some think the record companies only want to promote attractive artists for commercial reasons--but it seems to run deeper than that when you consider that beauty might affect judging too. I think we're witnessing something that's just human: when given a choice, most of us prefer to watch something beautiful.

Sarge

I found her a bit more attractive than Hilary Hahn ...

You are mistaking Joan for her brother John, who has indeed recorded Bach on the violin. Joan plays Bach on the accordion:

Sarge

I would not want to hear any works of Bach performed on accordion ...

Let's hope Hornteacher doesn't see this...  :o

I once listened to an accordeon recording of the Goldberg Variations .... and I liked it quite a lot!
The same for Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps.

Then again, I would be very unhappy if I did not love this instrument, because I also love to listen to French chansons, and they have a lot of accordeon to offer. :)

Aimard playing Ravel? First question:  Why wouldn't you want it?

Second question: Amazon is not cooperating, so I can't find details.  Is this a new recording or simply I haven't heard about before?

At any rate,  thanks for giving me another item for my wish list.

Any views on this set please ? Thank you !

It's a new recording.  The DG website states that international distribution starts on 1 September.

Don't be so rigid - a few minutes wouldn't kill you, and perhaps you'd enjoy it. ;D

I'm especially fond of the Brandenburg Polkas--especially as performed by this fabulous band:

This might have been mentioned before, but DG has a new release of "Bach on Accordion" performed by Richard Galliano.  No clips yet provided by DG.  This disc has Stuart's name all over it.

In addition I'm aware of the Goldbergs on accordion (Thorofon and Hanssler).  Could we be seeing a surge in classical accordion?

Don & David - I played the accordion as a teenager growing up in Michigan - quite popular back in the 1960s - Lawrence Welk influence I believe!  :D

Bach's music is so malleable to be adapted to other instrumentations - about a month or so ago, I saw a bluegrass mandolin virtuoso, Chris Thile, as a guest w/ our local symphony orchestra; he had written a Mandolin Concerto which was superb; but as an encore, he played one of Bach's violin partitas on the mandolin which was just unbelievable and thrilling - the orchestra's violinists sat there in awe!  Maybe Papa Bach knew this already about the music he wrote?  ;) ;D

George & David - this kid (now about 30 y/o or less?) is just amazing!  I purchased a number of his early recordings, i.e. when 13 & 16 yrs old (if interested, checkout the 'non-classical thread') - he is just phenomenal - but alas I'm not sure that he has put any of this classical music on record, BUT I've not really search his recordings to say for sure?  Let me know - but if those early recordings don't impress, then you won't be interested!  Dave  :D

I looked and there is nothing besides a couple of tracks on compilations.  Now could you imagine him as soloist on a Vivaldi Mandolin concertos set?  That would be WOW!  Man we need to write letters and get him to take up some classical recordings. ;D

Hi David - Chris Thile is a TRUE PHENOM!  He wrote & orchestrated his Mandolin Concerto, which included a full orchestra (even w/ harp & kettle drums - put in a post to the concerts thread).  After playing the Bach partita as an encore, he then did a '50s Bill Monroe song and sang - just a JOY!  As you may know, he is/was a member on Nickel Creek (CD below in my collection but does not reflect his talents) - my impression is that this guy could do ANY classical music mandolin playing (or comparable adaptations) w/o any effort - BTW, look into obtaining those early recordings when he was a teenager - amazing!  Dave  :)
