I've had a brief listen to some of this, Que, and I rather like the harpsichord tone in these particular recordings. I also like Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas in general ... though not on piano, which just bores me.

Even Horowitz or Pletnev?  :-\

Anybody know this recording - Beaux Arts playing piano trios by Turina/Granados. I found it for $10 in Krakow. Is it good?

"One good thing about music, when it hits- you feel no pain" Bob Marley

Tancata

Also thinking about investigating more of the "non-warhorse" Handel - anyone heard this? As well as the recording, any thoughts on how the actual music stands up to Saul, Messiah, Giulio Cesare, et al?

Handel "Hercules" - von Otter etc, Minkowski

That's funny, the only way I can take Scarlatti is on the piano, like a Steinway Grand. Anything on the harpischord is painful to listen to. Sounds like a guy banging on a bunch of tin cans.

The new erato

Hercules is (I think) one of Handel's so called English operas (along with Semele and Agrippina IIRC) which are generally very well regarded: Havne't heard Semele, but consider Hercules and Agrippina essential Handel.

Search the site in English and it says that that is the 1972.

This one is the '76 - '77: http://www.hmv.co.jp/product/detail/24903

This is the (I believe OOP) Accord release:

http://www.amazon.fr/Bach-Suites-violoncelle-Pierre-Fournier/dp/B00004VLH7/ref=sr_1_12/403-5203405-9475665?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1182696819&sr=1-12

I haven't heard the earlier Fournier, but I would imagine it's the equivalent of the earlier Milstein Bach S&Ps, i.e. the better choice.

Thanks for the link to the Accord-release.

I am surprised to see, that he (after the DG recording) recorded the suites twice more, which makes four times in all.
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

I own this CD. I don't think it's one of Handel's strongest works but it's Handel nevertheless. Patient listeners will appriate the music. Performance and sound are excellent.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Not heard them, so can't comment. :(

Let's see if we can remedy that.  ;)

Thanks 71 dB and also Erato for your comments. I'll probably get this but I might look into Agrippina, Rinaldo or Serse instead - I want to listen to all of them, but these sets cost serious €€€. I'm sickeningly familiar with the "English choral tradition" Handel material, I've been dragged to amateur performances of all those since I was very small. I do appreciate them but I want to strike out into new territory.

I consider these ones that I have seen quite cheap.

First this box set with Sokolov (including Schubert D894 and D960 + some Beethoven, Chopin, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Scriabin). Does this one come highly recommended?

And how is this performance and this work by Miaskovsky? I don't know it all. It's supposed to be a classic.

And are these performances of the Nielsen concertos any good?

And how is this Lutoslawski concerto?

Has anyone heard this one yet?:

I heard that it isn't worth getting, if that's any help.  :-\

Is this one worth a few quid? I don't really know this music either (except that I've seen Platoon several times  :)):

No problem Tancata.

Most people perhaps find Agrippina, Rinaldo and Serse better than Hercules.

I paid £23.04 delivered for my Hercules (Amazon.co.uk Marketplace)

Classic interpretations of the Adagio and Appalachian Spring. I haven't heard the Gershwin but I'm sure it can take Lenny's affection and italicizing.
How many quids does it sell for?
