FWIW, Dave, I'm not a big fan of The Seasons...but I am a big fan of Jacobs on HM and his recording more than satisfies my need for some jaunty, well-sung HIPness.  ;D

Sigiswald Kuijken - Virgin Veritas - $1.14

I would say pass on this version. It's not terrible, but I find the choral parts much less interesting than Gardiner, for example. It is also too spare in sound for me. If you like that, perhaps you would like it more than I do. I generally dislike the overly spare and strict sound he produces in all of his Haydn (based on the Paris symphonies). Gardiner or Jacobs would, in my opinion, be better choices.

Hi David - I agree, i.e. like The Creation more, but feel the need for at least one version of The Seasons in my collection - will see how others 'chime in'?

Neal - thanks for the comments above; I have a number of Kuijken's recordings and a more 'spare' sound might be just what will interest me - found a 'used' copy on the Amazon MP for less that $2 (+ $3 H/S) - for me, worth the admission fee just to give it a listen, but plan to keep looking for another version.

cover it all Liszt's recordings by Brendel?

Even though I promised myself that I'm not going to buy any more CDs this year, my mouth is drooling over these recordings:

Haha, we are crossing threads here, MI.
That's the Stone Flower I own, it's the only full-ballet recording I've heard with the exceptions of the ballet suites from Jarvi on CHANDOS.
It is very good, btw.

Yes, we're crossing threads yet again. :P

I have Rozhdestvensky's recording of the complete ballet on the way, so once I hear this recording, it will be interesting to compare recordings once I've acquired that Chandos recording of it. The Stone Flower is seldom played in its complete form. I'm sure in Russia the suites are performed with more frequency than in Europe and the United States.

Why on earth would you say that?! ;)

I am very tempted by that Bartok as well. :)

I'm surprised nobody has reviewed this new Bartok recording yet. :-\ The violinist, James Ehnes, said that these concertos were some of his favorites to perform. I know they're quite taxing on the soloist.

Wow! Thanks for pointing this out. I've been looking for Liszt 1&2/Brendel/Haitink for some time, and it looks like this is not available everywhere. Sorry I don't know the answer to your question.

My experience with Ms Grimaud has been hit and miss, but the prospect of her playing Mozart seems intriguing.

It's on my to-listen-to pile (from the snippets I've listened to, it's very good), along with the new Chandos release of Delius concertos with Tasmin Little, which arrived today. I'll get to them one of these days.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, that new Delius recording looks quite interesting.

I notice the cover mentions a singer named Mojca Erdmann.  I know she's recently released a CD of Mozart on her own, which I haven't heard, but maybe if you check on her CD you'll get a feel for the quality of this one.

I read a review full of praise from the BBC Music Magazine. They gave it 5 stars for both performance and sound quality and could find a single fault. Buy it! ;)

Oh lord don't get me started on music magazines such as BBC Music, Gramophone, or Classic FM. ;) :D

Go ahead, give us your opinion! ;)

I normally buy the BBC Music or Gramophone magazines, sometimes some interesting reviews and chapters in there. :)

Yes, I've flipped through many of Gramophone and BBC Music magazines. I don't really have anything against the articles, but I think they show a strong British slant, which, in turn, makes them come off as biased.

I myself find there to be too many words in these magazines.  ;D

Could probably agree with that in some particular cases!
