I've never listened to Zinman in symphony No.7, but both his recordings of No.5 and No.6 are definitely beautiful and thrilling; if his version of Mahler No.7 was as fine as the previous ones, then pound the table ;)

No. 9 definitely MTT!

No. 7 probably Zinman.

I'm sort of the reverse of Jens.  I'd go with MTT in 7 and Zinman in 9.  I think Zinman's 9 is the one of the best recordings of that symphony, and almost certainly the best of his cycle.
However, you won't go wrong with MTT in 9.  But in his case, I'd say his entire cycle is worth getting (I'm not so keen about Zinman.)

In fairness, I didn't suggest MTT's Ninth over Zinman's Ninth, but over Salonen's Ninth (which I have heard live, also). I have not yet heard Zinman's 9th, sadly.

Thank you for your feedback Jeffrey and Jens. I certainly would like to own the whole MTT cycle... just look at the price though... might have to wait a while...

It is a tad...expensive.   I accumulated it in installments, and at least one of them I bought used--which I normally never do.  Avie has re-released the Third--I'm not sure what the price differential is.  (But remember that the MTT cycle is hybrid SACD, that 2,3,6,8 and 9 all run onto 2 CDs, and that the series includes DLvdE and a CD of orchestral songs (Wayfarer, Ruckert, and some of Wunderhorn--Kindertotenlieder fills out the 2nd CD of the Third).  The only real omissions are the lack of a full Wunderhorn cycle and a full 10th--only the Adagio, packaged with the 8th.  It's still expensive, but not as expensive as it might seem at first glance.)

Extremely sad.  I will be interested in your opinion when you eventually do have a chance to listen to it.

I assume those will be the 2 disc Goldbergs and the WTC - I can't recall other DG recordings. Both come highly recommended. I find the Goldbergs to be a bit slow, but beautifully played.

I have all the DG Bach recordings by Rosalyn Tureck already and it is not a given that the SQ of this set will be any better ...

Just a tad yes.... it's rather confusing. I found it on Avie's website for around £80, but everywhere else I look it's around £170.... I have asked my parents to buy it for me as a birthday present, which means I will have to wait till March to listen to it! But, in the meantime, I still have the Sinopoli and Bertini cycles to listen to!
Yes... shame MTT did not record a whole 10th... maybe he will one day.

Well, some conductors just don't 'believe' in it. And his hero Lennie didn't touch it, either.
The bit of the 10th he does conduct, on record and especially live, is quite special, though.

That would be the Harmonia Mundi recordings, I assume.
I have 13 of those CDs, six or seven more of them on the way from Presto, and plans to buy at least some of the rest.  Which should indicate what I think you should do.  Especially at that price.

But don't forget he also recorded Bach for EMI, and at least some--all of them, possibly--are available as Virgin budget doubles.

ETA--and he's also now started his own label, on which he's released a re-recording of the Motets.

Something's wrong there. You are hesitating about a Karajan recording?!
Ludwig and Kollo did the honors on Bernstein's recording with the Israel Philharmonic (on his first cycle, the one on what is now Sony), and I like them there.

As for the Martinu--I'm pretty sure John (Mirror Image) rates them fairly highly--in fact, the best available cycle, if I remember his view correctly.  I've got N. Jarvi/Bamberg Symphony on Brilliant, and found it perfectly satisfying.

Not at all, Karajan is my absolute favourite conductor, his powerful and brilliant conducting style was really close to perfection, I could never hesitate about his recordings. Nor could I about Neumann's Martinu Cycle, I listened to some excerpts from the symphonies and they sound excellent (as a matter of fact John recommended me this cycle).
I've just thought about which recordings I could buy for my birthday....

QuoteThat set is well worth the praise heaped on it.  I also have the cycles by Belohlavek/BBCSO, Järvi/Bamberg and Thomson/RSNO, and there is good stuff in all of them, but none I think to superior to Neumann.  Plus you get the signature sound of the Czech PO, worth a good bit in itself.

Sounds amazing, thank you for the feedback :)

No, no one really does. These kind of ugly, ungainly, unloving sets have been around for such a long time; at Tower we were ashamed of them, almost, and pushed them in the furthest corner.
They are not inexpensive (which I like), they are "cheap" in the worst sense. Sometimes they include a fine performance or a few morsels, but even then I find it easier (and space-saving) to get a particular recording on its own, which focuses the mind and senses. Sets like these are as gratifying as downloading, except space-wasting and not immediately had. Shudder-shudder. (If an Operetta-Box-Set need be had, the one on EMI is pretty much unbeatable.)

A great set and one I think you will seriously enjoy. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have, Ilaria. When is your birthday by the way? I remember from friending you Facebook, but it's coming up soon, right? My Mom's is Jan. 31st.

Certainly, Neumann's set sounds beautiful and I'm definitely going to buy it, thanks again for the suggestion John ; what a good memory, as a matter of fact my birthday is January 19th, next Thursday. :)
