These Krips discs are all excellent. The "Great" C Major symphony is among the best.

I'm a sucker for rare french opera arias. My favourite of them all is included in this recital: Ô Ma lyre immortelle from Gounod's Sapho.

This looks great, but does anybody know for sure?

EDIT: Also these.

Especially interested if anyone has a preference between the Schubert "Great"s.

I had the Krips/LSO 9 and it's outstanding.

That Brahms 1st with VPO is a thing of beauty, one of my favorite recordings of the piece. The rest is with the LSO and fine performances, the Brahms 4th is mono and bit on bright thin side. Worth getting for Brahms 1st alone.

I'll probably wait on the big Abbado box, but might go for this Ansermet-Stravinsky 4CD set

I didn't even notice since I was going to order the Prime copy, which was around $21 and change.

Yes!  Can't beat that.

I found it disappointing. I ended up selling mine.

Very disappointing. I did sell it after all.

I recall the whole thing sounding slack and woolly. Contrast to say Craft's or Boulez's sharp and precise recordings. It might be due in part to the Suisse Romande Orchestre not being quite top drawer of course.

Karl Henning

Well, and I confess to a fondness for both Craft and Boulez.

So is this recording of Beethoven's PC Nos 2 & 4 as spectacular as BBC Music Magazine claims it to be..?

Not that spectacular.  But magazine enthusiasm aside, it is good enough to warrant getting the box set.

If you have Bronfman/Zinman, you do not need the Andsnes series, which is similar in conception, orchestra size, tempo selection, etc. (and also similar in quality). Bronfman/Zinman might be a wee bit cheaper to collect, now that it's on Brilliant.

Anybody have a favorite recording of Lalo's "Namouna"?

The Andsnes Beethoven concerto cycle is one of the better ones of recent years, truly excellent. Great rapport between piano and orchestra and performances full of jest and insightfulness. Now, if you're specifically looking for a splendid Fourth Concerto, Andsnes is excellent indeed (Bronfman, already mentioned, is decisively less inspired in the Fourth), but for something truly special I'd suggest you also try the recent Sudbin/Minnesota/Vänskä rendition on BIS.

Here is a review from MusicWeb. It seems to be an odd mixture of recordings.
