Quote from: nico1616 on February 26, 2012, 11:01:53 AMListening to n°7 is like watching TV in Chinese, I don't have a clue what it means, it seems extremely complicated ...

That's an interesting description! The only really convincing recording I've heard of Mahler 7 is Tennstedt (from his studio cycle, not the live recording). Everyone else is too hard-edged, or else too sprawling. Maybe they think it is somehow a continuation of the 5th and 6th. I'd say in flavour it's closer to the 3rd or even the 1st.

You will notice, BTW, that after madaboutmahler arrives, every thread becomes the Mahler thread ;)

It is always nice when someone tries to share his musical passion :D
He's not the only Mahler addict, according to the owner of a cdshop here in town, Mahlercd's still sell in large quantities.
No one buys Mozart or Haydn anymore, but there is always demand for Mahler  ;)

Thanks, Nico! :) By the way, about the Mozart and Haydn - wait until you meet Gurn here! ;)

Welcome to the forum.

I have been Mahler-free for quite a while now and have suffered no ill effects.  0:)

Thanks!
Quite obviously you are one of the Mahler experts here :)

Well, our Daniel is assuredly the maddest about Mahler hereabouts : )

It took me quite a while to warm to Mahler, nor should I fairly describe myself as a "fan."

Yet, I am a dyed-i'-the-wool Shostakovich fan, no doubt.

Well, I'm quite sure that Mirror Image doesn't hate Mahler, he may just be reacting to the fanatic fans this composer has on this forum.

Heck, some people might react that way to Koechlin for similar reasons ...

No, I haven't heard Kondrashin's Mahler yet (expensive!).  I think he is supreme in Shostakovich, but I don't know if he has the gentleness and fantasy sometimes needed in Mahler.

He has his fine, fine moments, no question.

You know though ... Shostakovich scores need an openness to fantasy & douceur, too.

Ha! I don't need to defend Koechlin. It doesn't matter to me if someone likes his music or not, but I'm alway delighted to meet people who are. But I don't hold it against them because they don't. No, this isn't the right attitude to have.
