Wagner supposedly said that Verdi treated the orchestra like "a giant guitar" but this was probably the Rigoletto, La Traviata stage of Verdi. Where it is obviously an ironic exaggeration but not totally off the mark.
(FWIW I agree that Wagner without words does not work as well as some people claim but this also does not change the valid point that his specific operatic-symphonic style changed not only opera.)

Seriously now, I think Mandryka is right: Verdi and Wagner inhabit completely different worlds, their esthetic is completely different, their artistic goals are completely different, they are like apples and oranges.

Yep, completely different worlds; a bit like comparing, I don't know, Lucky Luke to Thomas Mann;D
