I have (mostly) complete sets by Boulez, Chailly, Geilen and Bernstein.  What other do y'all think would best complement (i.e. different but good) to these?

Todd

The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Thanks,

Also is there  recording of the 4th other than Bernstein that uses a boy soprano?

Not that I've heard or seen.  I prefer a woman to sing the part, and a womanly woman at that - Juliane Banse for Boulez, Kathleen Battle for Maazel, and Lucia Popp for Bertini are more my speed.

Not complete, but the first movement is included.

Yes, missed it it's out of order

Fast tempos the first movement of the 9th is almost a full 5 minutes shorter than Chailly

No, but Gielen's soprano is just about equally bad.

Actually, IMHO, Gielen's recording of the Fourth is quite unsuccessful as a whole (and not only because of the soprano in the last movement--her view of childlike innocence is rather awkward, reminding me more of Dennis the menace than anything else  :D ). Gielen's interpretation sounds to me like a sort of caricature of what an "objective" and "modern" approach should sound like (in a work particularly unsuited, I think, to this kind of extreme objectivism), and is devoid of warmth and adequate pacing. It's the low point :( in an otherwise superb and very important Mahler cycle  8) .

One great cycle not mentioned before: Gary Bertini on EMI. Superb on all accounts, very balanced and coherent  :) :).

(available much cheaper in some of the European amazon sites  ;) ).

I bought the Kubilek and listened to 1-3, and they are now easily my favorite performances.  Kubilek maintains a rhythmic drive that keeps pushing the music forward and makes the rubato sections much more effective.  I don't think there is a self-conscious moment anywhere.  I get the sense he knows what the music can express, and does not try to get more or less from the work than what it is.

The audite recordings that I've heard are incredible.  I have not heard all of his Mahler, I suppose I should.

I agree with the Bertini recommendation. However, if you want something really different - and if you can find it - this obscure set from Movieplay SA would make for a really bizarre addition. The recordings are mostly from Slovenia.

Actually yes. A recording of the 4th conducted by Anton Nanut uses Max Emmanuel Cencic as the soprano (treble) and he is far better than Helmut Wittek

Kubilek's 7th is too fast though, Boulez and Chaiily have this one
