Maurice Ravel and Nadia Boulanger.

My wallet will love you all !!  ;D

I hope it'll be your ears. The wallet will most certainly hate us all if it is of a frugal disposition.  :D

I don't think some of the members understand the concept of one recording. The OP didn't ask for box sets. He asked for single recordings that are not OOP (out-of-print) and are still in production and at, or close to, budget price.

Anyway, I'll take a stab at this in a minute...

As the title says, for a given maiden composer, what would be your recommended recording as an entry point please ?

A couple of guidelines :
- strictly one recording only
- not OOP
- boxset possible provided it remains an introductory budget choice
- full work(s) only
- type of the work is up you

ALWYN
ARNOLD
BANTOCK
BARTOK
BERG
BRAGA SANTOS
BRITTEN
CASELLA
DALLAPICOLLA
DUTILLEUX
GINASTERA
HONNEGER
IVES
JANACEK
LAANGARD
LIGETI
PIERNE
PROKOFIEV
REVUELTAS
ROUSSEL
STRAVINSKY
SZYMANOWSKI
TIPPETT
WAGNER

Starting with the first name on the list:

Alwyn -

[asin]B000C847FO[/asin]

Alwyn's 3rd symphony is what turned me onto his music.

Arnold -

[asin]B00005B4C7[/asin]

Bantock -

[asin]B000002ZOF[/asin]

Not budget price, but there's no competition for these works. James Judd has a Bantock disc but it's mediocre and I simply couldn't recommend it.

Bartok:

[asin]B000003FEJ[/asin]

This is still a highly recommendable Bartok recording and this was the first recording I heard of his music.

Berg:

[asin]B000001GH9[/asin]

If Mutter's performance of Berg's VC doesn't convince you of this work, then nothing will. One of the best Berg recordings I've heard.

Braga Santos -

[asin]B000053W4D[/asin]

Many would recommend the disc with the 4th symphony, but I recommend this one for two stunning works from his early and late periods.

Britten -

[asin]B00000E38N[/asin]

Casella -

[asin]B002CAOW0K[/asin]

Dallapiccola -

[asin]B000632POU[/asin]

Not much in the way of budget recordings, but this is a fine, introductory recording IMHO.

Dutilleux -

[asin]B000000B1S[/asin]

Ginastera -

[asin]B000IY063E[/asin]

Honegger -

[asin]B000000AS2[/asin]

Stay away from Plasson and Dutoit. Weak performances.

Ives:

Janacek -

[asin]B0000042DG[/asin]

There's really no around this as this 2-CD set is really the best introduction I can think of for Janacek.

Langgaard -

[asin]B0016IV1VW[/asin]

Ligeti -

[asin]B00005Y34N[/asin]

Pierne -

[asin]B002EYBOCI[/asin]

Prokofiev -

[asin]B0002OMOZS[/asin]

A definite budget priced set that contains, IMHO, some of the best performances I've heard of his PCs.

Revueltas -

[asin]B00000K2F1[/asin]

Roussel -

[asin]B006BBVLVO[/asin]

Stravinsky -

[asin]B000F6YW30[/asin]

Szymanowski -

[asin]B000I2ISN6[/asin]

Tippett -

[asin]B00005M0JQ[/asin]

I think this is probably the best introduction I can give for Tippett's unique sound-world. The Piano Concerto and Fantasia Concertante on a Theme of Corelli are sure to make a fan out of you.

Wagner:

[asin]B0000254UT[/asin]

One of Wagner's shortest operas (I believe) and one of my personal favorites. If you don't like this, then I'm quite certain you won't enjoy the rest of Wagner's later operas.

Well, you don't listen to piano or chamber music. But that doesn't mean that the 5-disc box containing all of the 2-fer (same performances), and more of Janacek's best instrumental works - the string quartets, the violin sonata, and piano music wouldn't be a better introduction.

No, but what does one recording mean to you?

How do you know what I listen to or don't listen to? I do post what I'm listening to a lot but there are many instances where I simply do not post. I could be listening to Szymanowski's solo piano music and you wouldn't know it.

Maybe even Bach's keyboard music.

You have, on several occasions, said that you don't listen to much solo piano music. I remember that Prokofiev's piano music didn't interest you much. If you listen to more solo piano and chamber music than you let on, good for you. But it would make it even more baffling to recommend that 2-disc set instead of the 5-disc set I recommended earlier in this thread.
I do recall that you like Ravel's piano trio, now that I think about it.
