Uncle Connie

New member here.  Incompetent one apparently, as I've been trying to figure out how to enter a post for two days, and finally took a guess and got lucky.  Hopefully any future contributions from me will be less awkward.  If not, just laugh, I can take it....

Classical lover since childhood, and I'm 68 so that's a lot of loving.  Home is sunny Southern California, USA.  For me, it all starts and ends with Haydn.  Yes, I've already seen all the Gurnatron stuff and am slowly clawing through it; I can be expected to open my big mouth over there quite soon.  Other passions:  Schubert, esp. the songs; I'm a semi-pro bass-baritone and used to do Schubert recitals (to good reviews) but at this age I've had to admit reality.  (I had occasion to try just one Schubert song this past weekend - Aufenthalt, from Schwanengesang - and it was real WORK!)  Bruckner.  Mahler.  Shosty.  The oratorio as a musical form after Bach.  Half a dozen Haydn contemps. of greater or lesser reputation, but for me they're definitely greater.  (His bro, Mike, is foremost.)  I hope I didn't leave out Brahms - did I?  oops.  And just to belie the charge of being conservative, because I'm not, let's toss in Allan Pettersson and Karl-Birger Blomdahl and Karl Amadeus Hartmann.

Because I'm still not certain this post is going to work, I do hereby shut up.  Now really, honestly, do I absolutely HAVE to tell someone that the sky is blue and Bach wrote the Brandenburgs every single time I post?

Gurn Blanston

Welcome aboard, Connie. Glad you figured it out. As you see, your first post needed to be approved (to be sure you weren't a spam-bot), but from now on it should be a piece of cake.

I look forward to talking Haydn with you when you're ready. Also, some of your other interests, like Michael Haydn and Classical Era contemporaries, would be very welcome in Gurn's Classical Corner, unless you want to start a thread on them individually.

Howdy there Connie. Greetings from Schubert's Vienna. Welcome to the forum.

Whereabouts are you in SoCal? I am a native SoCal gal, born in Hollywood and grew up in Eagle Rock.

Welcome: 'Aufenthalt' was the first Schubert song I learned and that was for a competition. Many others have been added since, though I am pretty silent these days. Work and earning a living don't half get in the way at times.

I hope you enjoy yourself here abouts.

Hello and welcome, Connie!
Glad to see you listed Mahler as one of the composers you are passionate about! I am passionate about Mahler too, believe it or not! ;)

Hope you enjoy yourself here!

Dude!  You're in the club!  ;D

Have you heard Birger-Blomdahl's outer space opera Aniara

Welcome, Uncle Connie, and you mention quite an array of composers! Pettersson and Hartmann are fairly well known (certainly here at GMG) but I don't know Blomdahl at all.

In any case, enjoy yourself, and welcome again.
