I'm new to being serious about classical (always enjoyed it) and looking forward to picking everyone's brain. Currently, I'm really enjoying the two Mercury Living presence CD's I picked up (Kubelik Conducts and Hanson conducts Barber etc). The box set is on my radar. I really like 40's, 50's and 60's UK recordings. Haunting piano recordings from 40's, 50's and 60's (Ashkanazy Decca recordings). Looking forward to the forum

Welcome, Abery!
So, do you have any favourite composers, compositions, or perhaps interpreters, yet?

Hello and welcome from a fellow new-ish member!

I think you'll find a lot to like here!  :)
So much great music, so little time...

Hi Abery, and welcome. Lots to admire in those old Mercury recordings, and I would bet that most classical listeners will have encountered some of them at some point. I grew up hearing that famous Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture (below, with Dorati/Minneapolis) and it is still pretty thrilling, even given the vintage sound.

Anyway, enjoy yourself here.

So far in the Classical world, he is mine as well. Rachmaninov pieces, from what I have heard, is a style I'm going to seek out.

I'm very pleased you've been enjoying Rachmaninov's works, he's one of my favourite composers; and of course, Ashkenazy is the best interpreter of Rach's music I've ever heard. :)

Out of curiosity, which pieces have you listened to?

I have the Decca Legends CD of Piano Concerts #2 -#3. I believe the pieces were recorded in early 60's. I'm amazed how the vintage Decca, London and Mercury recordings sound. Even with standard 16/44 CD's. I hear the RCA Living stereo and Red Seals are very well recorded as well. I pick up pretty much most of the $1 bin classical CDs I find if they are on a Major label. I have been avoiding Laserlight and other off label recordings. I thought Cannon was a cheap label but finding out they have some decent releases. Also, I read that any Time-Life releases are good.

Greetings from yet another Ashkenazy fan here in Vienna (love his Beethoven). Welcome to the forum.
