Please don't recommend me the Hyperion. :'( Nothing personal.

I've got the VoxBox and just need the most 'Hollywood' sounding version. I liked the Capucon Bros. sample, but I'm really looking for a non-Ravel issue. Even the 'Heart in Winter' soundtrack sounds interesting though.

Arden Trio/Delos??

Fontenay Trio/Teldec??

Wanderer Trio/HM??

Any and all are welcome.

Perhaps the Borodin Trio on Chandos? It's coupled with a Debussy Cello and Violin sonata. There is also an interesting Naxos issue coupled with a Debussy and Schmitt trio.

Edit: There is also the Beaux Arts Trio, who can be found on an Eloquence issue along with one other Ravel piece and two Debussy.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

It is. It's the one with Rouvier and it's outstanding.

I like the one with Richter the most though -- but really they're chalk and cheese and you need both.

I would have said the most "Hollywood"- sounding Ravel Trio (if old-time) is Heifetz w/Rubinstein & Piatigorsky. The RCA Gold Seal CD I have also contains Debussy, Respighi & Martinu.
I have that Rouvier in a 2 CD collection on Brilliant. also including Debussy & Fauré. Very recommendable and one of the best bargains ever.
The Violin's Obstinacy

It needs to return to this one note,
not a tune and not a key
but the sound of self it must depart from,
a journey lengthily to go
in a vein it knows will cripple it.

As far as I know Rouvier/Kantorow/Muller trio recorded Ravel Trio twice. First in 1973 for Erato (Un Coeur en Hiver soundtrack being one of its incarnations on disc) and then second time for Denon in mid 80s. I'm not sure but I think the one on Brilliant Classics is reissue of that second recording. Does Brilliant give any dates?

Haven't heard the later one but Erato is my favorite performance of the trio.

There are so many relatively new recordings of the piece, so why snyprrr wouldn't take few for the team and get some of those and then tell us are they any good: Trio George Sand, Trio Suleika, NZTrio, Vienna Piano Trio, Trio Cérès, The Rembrandt Trio, Trio Dali, Trio Chausson, Fujita Piano Trio, Trio Italiano, Trio Archipel, Arden Trio, Abegg Trio, ... list seems endless.

Went a'sampling last night again. It really seems as though the Capucin(sic?) Bros. still 'sound' amongst the best,... whew, there are just soooo many Ravels...

Capucon brothers would be my second choice. I wasn't initially happy about recording, piano sounded bit soft and too much in the back, but it seems my ears adapted with time. Fine performance.
