Quote from: Kalevala on April 26, 2025, 10:27:28 AM:laugh: I suspect, that if you kept it down to a decent level, that he was enjoying it; however, as Karl said it's about getting to know the bird and trying to understand what they were saying.  If you hadn't been around the bird often (or also that species?), it could be hard to figure out.  That said, I suspect that you would be sensitive enough to interpret if the bird was upset.  Talk to your parents and share what you observed and what their thoughts are.  Perhaps a good learning experience for all of you?

This was 10 years or more ago, and that parakeet has long been pining for the fjords.  :o

But I appreciate your advice, and it's something I will remember should it come up again.

I was thinking of chasing down the "Language Learners" thread but figured I'd just hang it here in the Shed. A fellow composer related today that he felt metaphorically kicked in the teeth. I shared with him a phrase I first heard from a native of Ohio, who told me that this motto appeared in the foyer of a Princeton dormitory. I have the impression that he spoke of it as part of a mosaic on the floor. This would be unusual, but not genuinely impossible, I suppose:
Illegitimi non carborundum!
My own knowledge of Latin is sketchy and imperfect, so I've only today learnt that, in all cosmic appropriateness, the Latin here is itself not strictly legitimate.

I've been wondering: why do we need a new thread about Life, the Universe, and Everything, when we still have, and always have had, the Shed?

The shed has been boarded up for quite some time.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

Whenever I feel useless, I just remember that someone is paid to choose a five-letter word for the NYT Wordle, and they frequently do a bad job of it, too. >:D

In the Shed, you may see those words in an entirely different light.

Yes, this thread may shed a new light on well known words.
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

That Ol' Self-Same Shed courtesy of Internet AI

In the backyard's quiet corner, where the overgrown weeds creep,
Stands That Ol' Self-Same Shed, secrets it does keep.
Weathered wood and paint peeled thin, a history it holds so deep,
Of rusting tools and forgotten dreams, while memories softly sleep.

The faint scent of sawdust lingers, mingled with damp earth's embrace,
Echoes of projects started, and finished at a leisurely pace.
A haven for the maker's hand, a quiet, contemplative space,
Where shadows dance and dust motes gleam, reflecting light and grace.

Though seasons pass and years may fly, and changes mark the land,
That Ol' Self-Same Shed remains, a steadfast, familiar stand.
A silent witness to the world, a comfort close at hand,
A sanctuary from the chaos, a place to understand.

Just looking around ... do you think the ol' Shed needs a lick of paint? I always assumed The Shed would be self-renovating.

Where's MN Dave when you need him?

All through the well-remembered fields I travel.
By the tinkling brook I softly tread.
But Lo! A darkling shadow blocks my footpath!
It cannot be! It is! I've found The Shed.

Indeed. On one hand, I see him now and again on FB, on t'other, like most of us, perhaps, he is disappointed in how the tone of social media has changed.

Might Applied Music essentially be a branch of Chaos Theory? It's a hypothesis I am entertaining.
