How Has GMG Changed Through The Years? Or Has It?

That might be because most of the regular posters with thousands of posts here seems to be only cd enthusiasts at most but are reacting like they were musicologists. Throwing a few adjectives here and a few adjectives there seems to be enough to respond.
Prejudgemental and ignorant ideas are written as if they were facts. I guess you can't debate many things or call it a forum if "my ideas are more true than the truth itself" kind of stubbornness overwhelm knowledge or responds with crassness are more than the ones with openness. I've read most of the latest topics and i believe there are many posts from same people here that wouldn't empower or motivate any healthy conversation. No respect for others no discussion...that is of course an opinion.

Welcome to GMG, Raven:)

It originally (pre-2004) had a hideous purple and orange color scheme. :)

Personally, I'dlike to do more elaborate posts. But the time for that seems constantly lacking... :-\

Most of the time, a brief fly-over and posting some short posts is all I can manage. A pity really - but fortunately I have a real life as well! ;D

Sounds familiar.

Welcome, Raven!

Funny thing about your story is: some years ago I would have agreed.
But IMHO many of these rude and self-appointed connaisseurs and fact spitters have left the board or were even banned.
As Greg wrote, it's a bit more pleasant now, though maybe not as 'exciting' as before. But, like him, I prefer pleasant.

Another cause why this board might have changed during the years is probably the fact ;) that an internet forum as such has grown old-fashioned.
Most people are twittering, facebooking or blogging now, and using iPads and tablets instead of PC's. People seem to have left the internet boards and the newsgroups.

And many of them who decided to stay, seem to have adopted the superficiality of those newer social media. They want to press smileys and like and don't like buttons instead of writing full sentences. And we're all growing more and more used to that.

Apart from all this blabbering: being a member since 2004 (old forum), I still think that GMG is a pleasant place to come!

I must have been around at that time!  I have a only a vague recollection of that.

In fact, I cannot recall when I first joined: the archives here only go back to 2007, but I think I must have entered the musical staves here 10 years ago or so.

November 2004?

Although these stats might be from already the 2nd edition of GMG.
No purple and orange here.

Marc,
That was my thought when I was mulling this yesterday. I think that the great crowd for whom Facebook is intended are quite happy to leave off here (and other fora) since we require a bit more effort to post to and no easy gratification beyond ones own efforts, which aren't always repaid. Oh, the uncertainty! :o :-\

Yes, I've been here since early '03 myself, and despite a few times when logging on was a crapshoot, I still do enjoy coming around. :)

I remember when both of you chaps joined. When Karl came along, I actually got a PM from someone who said "watch out for this guy, he's... eccentric (my word)".    :D

I'll go back and find you a screenshot. It's cute. Rob was so in love with it.   :D

Well done, Navneeth. I was trying to recall where I saw that post, and you dug it up meanwhile. Ain't it purty?  ::)

Cute colours in those good ole days!

I think there was a huge upgrade around autumn 2004, after which I joined.
And there was another one in mid 2006 IIRC.

Btw, from the second half of 2004 up to april 2007, a great part of the old forum is still available to lurk around .... I still do that from time to time:

As a result, shouldn't the relative amount of discussions involving multiple sentences (or even paragraphs!) have increased? A paradox, to be certain. ;)

I'm doing MY part.... I've always shared what I call "Herman's Dream", the one where there is a large core of members who post in depth articles about subjects they know, while learning new things from other posters following suit. I've just been able to handle the disappointment somewhat more easily than Herman has.   :-\

Okay, not quite 10, but 8 years in November: interesting!

Concerning in-depth articles, I must admit that few people have been commenting on larger articles, e.g. the discussion of Luke Ottevanger's Around Fern Hill.

Perhaps it is again the time issue.

A (former) correspondent was informed by a mutual acquaintance that he owed me a letter (he had not written for half a year).  He informed her that he "had a life" and "owed nobody anything."   :o

But if you recall the purple and orange days, you might have joined even earlier. I've been a member since november 2004, too, but the purple and orange were already gone by then. I think that Rob upgraded and changed software and that, because of that, everyone, including older members, had to join again. Like in spring 2007, when the 'new' GMG started.
