Just to add my two cents worth, in no particular order [except for Gardiner]....

Gardiner
Harnoncourt
von Karajan
Kletzki
Ansermet
Hogwood
Christie
Monteux
Bruggen

....and the no. 10 spot is a battle between Barbirolli, Walter, Wand and Haitink  :)

I prefer your 10th spot than you top 9  :P

I am glad that you appreciate it  8)
We Irish tend to try to alleviate serious situations with some humour.

Here we go...
Kleiber ('cos he was the greatest)
Karajan (for his impact on recordings)
Solti (for his Ring Cycle, if for no other reason)
Abbado (but why is he more convincing on video than plain audio?)
Boulez (pace, rhythm, and timing!)
Bernstein (undisputed master of over-the-top)
Jansons (best living conductor)
Boult (most under-rated)
Klemperer (because he was Mahler's understudy)
Haitink (for maintaining consistently high standards for so long)

Honourable mentions to:
Yannick Nézet-Séguin (on his way to the very top)
Any number of Finns and Estonians (on their way to the very top too)
Seiji Ozawa (underappreciated, underrated)
Kent Nagano (underappreciated, underrated, under-barbered)
Valery Gergiev (thinks he belongs in the top ten)
Marin Alsop (... but she's a woman!!!!)
