If you want to tell me buy the big box set, please still vote for Haitink and then tell me.

Other than that please select two.  That way I could include Boult (decca) in the poll but still see what others like as their second choice.

Handley in  the big box, not Haitink.

David, I'd say Boult for sure (either one).  I've only heard the 6th from Andrew Davis, but it is splendid!

I am excited for you to get your RVW symphonies box, whichever you decide upon!  :)

I have a feeling John (MI) won't be voting for Slatkin.  :D

Controversial subject:  Which recording has the best/worst wind machine (the the Antarctica Symphony)?   ;D

boult (emi) is the only box i have.  it therefore receives my vote  :)

True to this board, I vote for all, or none at all, or be damned!

Sorry, Dave, I only have the Haitink so cannot really help you on this. However, I have been reading all these posts on the 'considering' thread and now here with much interest, and excitement to see which you pick! I'll probably end up wanting another one fairly soon, but first I need to revisit the whole Haitink set which has been on my listening pile for quite a long time.... :)

When I play the Haitink 8th the wife always asks me to close the door because of the draughts. You cannot get a better wind machine than that.

Boult Decca (which every lover of VW has to own) and Haitink. If given a third and fourth choice, it would be Slatkin, then Thomson.

Relying merely on memory, I'd say Haitink. But when I get a spare moment or two, I'll do some direct comparisons.

Seem you agree with the wife.

These poll results are contradicting my expectations from the posts... I was expecting Boult (decca) to have a large lead, it doesn't at all.  Only one person voted for that set.  Currently Haitink is in the lead.

I want to see what happens later.  While I'm sleeping I bet the Europeans will be up and voting in this thread.

I thought that people considered the Haitink set to be unidiomatic, black sheep kind of set that you either love or hate?  Hmm... interesting.

I'll keep up with this thread tonight and see what happens. :)

Your thread is buried in the Poll section. Not sure how many people actually know it's here. And too, some of the VW lovers never venture into these parts.

Previn and Slatkin for me.  But then, those are the only two I own, and really, the only two I plan on getting.  I marginally prefer Slatkin.

This isn't my favorite stuff, but Haitink makes dull seem even duller. Boult is OK, but even that doesn't hold my interest. Previn is the only set I can listen to and not fidget.

I'm surprised Previn is out in front, considering I seem to be the only person who ever recommends him!

I thought Haitink's was ... not great.

Especially since there's no wind machine in the 8th!

Well spotted; should have been the 7th.

Thanks everyone!

Previn = used for $50 but with a seller with a poor rating on amazon mp (if you screw up nearly 1 in 10 orders, you're doing something wrong).

Haitink = controversial

and Handley has the same rating.  It's cheaper to buy the big set so I just did.
