I just received evidence of a plan by Republicans for voter fraud in Albuquerque.  I live alone and received one of those notices from the county clerk's office a few days ago informing me of absentee and early voting dates and locations in Bernalillo County.  Today, Saturday, October 6, 2012, I received another of these notices addressed to Ms Cecilia Newcomer, a Republican woman born 8/20/1974.

To be voter fraud, someone claiming to be Cecilia Newcomer and who is not Cecilia Newcomer or does not live in the precinct will have to show up and vote.  I don't think anyone would bother with this kind of fraud.

     You won't change the outcome of an election by preventing a tiny number of fraudulent voters, even supposing there are some. You might change the outcome if you disqualify legit voters by the thousands, and intimidate thousands more from even trying.

     The Republican mailing is clever, creating doubt about who really is entitled to vote. Not doubt by election workers, but doubt in the mind of an unsophisticated voter without a drivers license. If you think that poll watchers will challenge you, you might give up, thinking your right to vote will not be honored any more. In the great majority of cases, it will. The voter might not know this, though, and that's what the Repubs are counting on.

     "Ms. Newcomer".......I've noticed that Repub operatives occasionally leave shit-stains of "wit" to mark their path through life.

     Being a Republicreep is not, by the way, a dead end occupation. If you study hard you may end up Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Agree with your point and I think voter ID is a good way to root out voting fraud and to ensure illegals cannot vote ...

     And you know what, so do I! A sincere effort to provide all current voters that lack IDs of the proper kind with a state issued picture ID with a chip in it (like my passport card) is a good idea. There's no rush to do it, since actual voter fraud is nearly nonexistent, but with secure IDs voter intimidation would be much harder.

But it's a very poor way to root out voter fraud, since in-person voter fraud is practically non-existent.  However, it is a good way to disenfranchise thousands of people, especially if you make it difficult to get the IDs by cutting back on DMV hours, making the documentation requirements onerous, and making sure the state government doesn't actually have to the resources to get everyone who needs one an ID in time.  And it's a way to just gum up the works in some precincts by creating hours-long waits to vote or the prospect of getting hassled by confused poll workers.

And then there are the other Republican voter suppression schemes:

* Bogus voter purges, purging thousands of legitimate voters.
* Making the requirements for voter registration so onerous that even the League of Women Voters have to give up their registration drives.
* Cutting back on early voting.
* Voter caging

Republicans just do not like the democratic process.

I've received a few misdirected electoral notices in my time. Sometimes people just don't both to update their address when they move.

GOP intelligence and efficiency is at least a little bit overrated.  For instance,  the Romney campaign and the GOP apparently think I'm registered as a Republican.  In the spring, I received numerous calls urging me to fill out my absentee ballot for Romney in the Florida primary (in Florida, unlike some other states, only voters registered as members of the GOP can vote in a GOP primary, and only Democrats can vote in a Democratic primary).  And now I'm being attacked twice or three times a week by phone calls urging me to vote by absentee ballot for Romney or attend a Romney Ryan rally.  The most recent one invited me to a rally in which the featured Ryan's mother and sister.  Apparently Fort Lauderdale doesn't rate the headliners.....

In truth, I've been a registered Democrat at this address for over thirty years,  and will vote for either Gary Johnson or Obama next month.  (If I get sick enough of the Republicans,  I'll vote for Obama in revenge.  Otherwise, Johnson, just like I voted for the Libertarian Party candidate in the previous two presidential cycles.   In 2000,  I was probably one of those hanging chads that voted for Gore.)
