That's sad indeed! RIP
I will play some of his music today!

Kontrapunctus

Very sad. He certainly made some stunning contributions to a wide variety of repertoire. We guitarists, or at least some of us, are so grateful for "The Royal Winter Music: Sonata No.1 and 2."

That's a shame.

On Monday night last week, I listened to Dohnanyi's recording of The Bassarids, which, I'm ashamed to say I'd only dipped into before. (I'd picked it up for £3 from HMV.) It's a stunning work with some incredibly inventive orchestral writing. Despite the mono sound, the live recording has plenty of impact. I've recently listened to Knussen's highly regarded Undine and a few of the symphonies, DG and Rattle EMI, but I must dig out the DG The Raft of the Medusa which I loved when I first heard it.

Anyone heard/got an opinion on Elegy for Young Lovers?

I am sad and disappointed that in all the comments about Hans Werner Henze his beautiful opera L'Upupa has not been mentioned. Henze wrote the libretto to this charming fairy tale, wonderful settings and Matthias Goerne is so good as Al Kasim, the leading role, with John Mark Ainsley's Der Dämon a perfect partner. The DVD of the World Premiere in Salzburg is issued by EuroArts.

I have a DVD of "Boulevard of Solitude" which I enjoyed a great deal.  I have also recently listened to Ondine.  L'Upupa is also on my shelves but I have not found time to listen to it.  At the moment, it is doubtful that electricity will last long enough to get through it.  : (
