My Malaysian broadband company has just sent me the following balance required RM 1,116,445.52
Thats for the months-April to June.
That translates into 160,846.21 GBP or 237,478.822 EUR or 324,494.586 USD

I have had problems accessing the online billing ever since i started with them in January.  I pay quarterly about RM250 so was expecting a similar bill for the quarter April-june.  A bill which i have yet to be able to download.  Last month (june) i managed to download the bill and it said "outstanding balance = 0", now in July it says RM 1,116,445.52
All for a service which is patchy at best and not much quicker than dial-up.

I called them this evening- i was a little frantic-i initially thought it was over 1000 RM which is about 200 Euro or 300 USD - even that worried me.

As ever the guy on the phone could not help me....the person in charge was not there and he told me to ring back tomorrow ???

Oh and the name of the company sums it up 'formerly known as Gold information systems" - not kidding , a gold-mine indeed.

A few thoughts - is the bill itemised? If not then you need to ask them how these charges occurred. My main thought is that this is a mistake and simply by contacting their accounts department this will be cleared up.

However, another thought is that your PC has been hijacked by a spammer (or the like) and is being used to receive and redirect spam e-mail all over the world and the large bill is as a result of you exceeding, by a large margin, your quarterly allowance. Because of this possibility I'd check this out now. If you're on broadband, are the lights on your modem continuously blinking? Right click on the little network icon (it looks like two PC monitors) in your system tray to check how much traffic you're sending and receiving. Also there are AV programs that detect the presence of spam bots. You can also install a net counter to determine your upload and download totals. Read this to give you some idea.

Let's hope that it's just an accounting error.

It's either a mistake or a scam. maybe its 324$ and some idiot made a mistake. Still is steep.

My last landlord did some similar crap. For 3 months he didn't charge us for the heat during winter, and suddenly it went out and I showered in cold water. He brought told me and my roommate it would be 450 dollars for the heat but never showed us a bill or mentioned it earlier. I paid it before I  moved back just so my roommate wouldn't have to but I always thought it was bs. Long story short, all my clothes are in the basement of his house because I hoped to return to school, and now I only own 12 tee shirts that say Newport Rhode Island on them.

The guy at the company just laughed- he assures me it is just 220 RM which is about 30 UK pounds/45 Euro.
Was worried for a second.
It is good to hear about those spammers anyhow.  I always disconnect my connection from the socket when i am not using it anyhow-am old fashioned like that -and i don't leave it on all the time.

Thanks for your concern guys.

If you're well protected you don't have to turn off your modem. Try installing this very simple little program.
