Very sad. Her recording of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk was my introduction to the piece - and still a recording I love.

She was essential to Britten's War Requiem, without her it isn't the same piece.

I disagree. There have been many fine recordings of War Requiem.

I can still hear her (in my mind) singing Shostakovich 14 with her husband Mstislav Rostropovich conducting members of the Moscow Philharmonic; I can't imagine a better performance.  Walk in beauty, Mme. Galina.
Imagination + discipline = creativity

Pretty well the end of an era. Who's left from those stalinist days? Very sad.

THAT sounds nice! ;)

She was the most adorable of the Tatiana in Eugene Onegin, with Belov and Lemeshev in the Bolshoi version conducted by Khaikin (1955).
