I watched a bit of this yesterday and it appealed to the unusual side of my tastes.  anyone else see it?

Thanks for the reminder! That's one I've been meaning to watch.

Yes, I have seen it and enjoyed it enormously. The first world war setting worked a great deal better than I imagined it could. I also thought the musical side was very fine.

What Mike said. Tremendously enjoyable.

I have another type of question in this topic.
Who is the best in your opinion in the role of the Queen of the night?
Diana Damrau for egzample performs it really well, in my opinion.

Lucia Popp, on the Klemperer Flute, is my favorite Queen.

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Agreed, never heard anyone to match her.

That's brilliant! Thanks for posting it, David. Never mind that I haven't watched even a traditional production in its entirety, I am curious to know how this one develops further. (Amazon UK and MP have inexpensive copies, but it's a region 2 DVD. >:( I'll have to consult Demonoid, then. >:D)

EDIT:

Quote from: WikipediaThe Magic Flute is Kenneth Branagh's English-language film version...

Oh.

(Necroing the thread)

The best thing about this production is the English language libretto, which is an absolutely stunning translation by Stephen Fry. It's a hundred times better than the translation used by the Met Taymor production. The poetry absolutely glows.

Yes.  No one else makes it sound so natural and effortless. 8) 8)

I enjoyed the Branagh film, although I seem to remember (it's been a few years since I've watched it) that not all the singers were to my liking, and there was some truly shoddy camera work. Especially Der Hölle Rache was ridiculous in that aspect.
