Won't have a tremendous amount of time there, but was wondering.  I'm staying at the Shangri-la hotel.  Anything close by?

I'll also be in Hong Kong and Taipei, but won't have much time there either.  Any suggestions?

It has an incredible selection - but it is rather expensive.  I have been there a few times, found must haves on the shelves, and ordered from online sellers.  The same is true of HMV in Central.

In Taipei, try Chia Chia (110 Zhonghua Rd. Sec. 1) - but the pricing issue also applies.  I found a very nice store in Taichung a couple of years ago, but that will be out of your way.  I am going to Taipei in May - if you do find anything worthwhile, let us know.

I've only been to KL once - drew a blank on CD stores.  Great food, though!

Enjoy your trip.

Thank you.  Looks like Kuala Lumpur won't be possible as the distance from hotel to mall is a bit far for my timing.  Taipei is more possible as I will be staying near the main train station and it's within walking distance.

I'll be in Bangkok too, and have been there before, but couldn't find a good place while I was there...ideas?

Taipei is well set up for public transport and taxis are easy and cheap.  Most hotels will provide you with a phrase card which you can show to taxi drivers - with the hotel address and other landmarks.

My only experience of Bangkok has been changing planes at the airport a few times.

From what I remember, that one is no more (but nowadays HMV as a whole is no more anyway, if I am not mistaken). They were in the process of closing that store towards the later part of 2011 (it wasn't bad, indeed, but better for movies and TV series).

I was last there in March 2012.  No signs of closure.  HMV UK seems to have gained a temporary reprieve at least. Around 60 stores going, but 200 or so staying open.  But unlike HMVs in other locations, I think that the HK stores are linked to the UK.  Perhaps Jo Jo can report back.  I thought there were half a dozen HMV stores in HK - I recall another branch in TST.

The previous Central location of 14 years closed and was replaced by some designer goods store in July 2011. It reopened in another building in March 2012.

Yes, there is/was another in TST and yet another one (not as big) in Causeway Bay. It was worth visiting the various stores since prices and promotions varied from one to the other.
