It was a Godowsky-Chopin etude, to be accurate, with only tepid applause at the end.  Had Hamelin worn a revealing, skin-tight outfit, he may have fared better with the audience.

Hamelin's an incredible player, but for me at least Op. 10 No. 1 is the single least emotionally resonant/musically interesting of the twenty-four. It's no wonder nobody much cared for it.
