An extremely vivid and fine Bacchus et Ariane from this wonderful set:

ComposerOfAvantGarde

Currently listening to this piece and really enjoying it! I like it more than last year's winner.

I guess I was in the mood for some more Neapolitan harpsichord music:

On now. Cd 2 of this set. Symphony No 2. These performances seem pretty laid back after Wyn Morris! His recordings of No's 4 & 5,up next. I'm not with the Karajan haters. I think some of his recordings were quite good,or even very good! He's not one of my favourite conductors, though. All those carefully chosen, and, posed photographs of him. And remember those shots of him with the motorbike and private plane? The one of him on the motorbike is quite funny, though!! ;D Yes,Dvorak could have done with one of those!! The Berlin Philharmonic is like a very well drilled and oiled machine at times, though. Some times a bit too smooth!! I quite like this set of recordings. The box is so slim, taking it down to a charity shop wouldn't provide me with much extra room, anyway!! Vandermolen referred to the pose,on the front of the box,in a thread, some time ago. I'd actually never thought about it till then!! The man's just conducting the orchestra, for goodness sake! ::) ;D  Although, the background is out of focus. He's issuing some command to the orchestra. I'm no expert. What do you think he's telling them?!! I do have some idea;but I'm too thick to know the technical term for it!! :( Karajan did have a very fine head of hair, though,I must say!! And by a happy coincidence,so did Wyn Morris!! :o

The second disc in the Arditti Quartet's complete survey of Ferneyhough's complete works for string quartet and trio was this morning's listening.

Ferneyhough
String Quartet no. 3 (1987)
String Quartet no. 4 (1989-90), for string quartet and soprano voice
(with Claron McFadden, soprano)
Streichtrio (1994)
String Trio (1995)
Arditti Quartet (Irvine Arditti, Ashot Sarkissijan, violins; Ralf Ehlers, viola; Lucas Fels, cello)
[Aeon, 2014]

Comparing these works to yesterday's disc of pieces written between 1967 and 1983, Ferneyhough has achieved greater delicacy and transparency of texture in his chamber music writing. The fourth quartet, scored for string quartet and soprano, is a work of particular distinction.

Entirely independent of your post I too chose to listen to the Mahler 10th, but this one:

I also plan on hunting down as many of the other realizations as I can find.  Naxos has Wheeler/66.

Rhythmic Etudes for violin & piano, H 202 from this set:

I just love this work.

The 4th:

This, ladies and gentlemen, is how it's done. Turnovsky doesn't push the music as he knows he doesn't have to --- it simply propels itself on it's own. These are the kind of Martinu performances that a person should take serious note of. If I were a conductor, this recording would be my reference for how Martinu should be performed. Ancerl is good, but Turnovsky has made his way to the core of this music IMHO.

Martinu's Three Piano Trios, recorded by the Smetana Quartet on Supraphon

[asin]B01AJ0JK7O[/asin]

I already knew the first trio in a recording by the Bekova Trio, but this is my first hearing of the other two. In my first exposure, I got the most pleasure from the Third Trio in C major. It reflects Martinu's style contrasting restless moto perpetuo passages with more lyrical material. In the first Trio (more of a suite than an sonata) I really enjoy the first movement, then my interest seems to flag. The second Trio will take more time to absorb. An initial listen won't cut it.
