One of Villa-Lobos' best symphonies, IMHO. Ben-Dor leads a great performance.

I also have that set but do not remember it in any detail other than liking it. Perhaps when I complete my Pettersson and Melartin cycles I will revisit this set.

It would be good!

I should revisit Schmidt's symphonies. He's a composer that has been pushed to the wayside for too long.

Schmidt has interesting music that perhaps doesn't appeal to some immediately. However, I think his symphonies don't disappoint (I have some mixed feelings with the 3rd, though).

Now:

I'm very fond of the 3rd, especially the Pesek recording.

I don't regret buying this set, some pieces catch my attention immediately,it is surprisingly for music that is so completely unknown to me.
I am so inexperienced ,there is so little to hold on,it is just listening and see what is coming.

Peter Schat  Signalement (1961)

Michel Puig   Provisoires Agglomérats   ( almost frightning music, there is a  ominous  atmosphere  )

JS Bach: Mass in B minor [van Veldhoven]

This is a first listen to this recent purchase. Smooth, refined, polished and reverential is how I would describe this version. All of the forces perform very well but the solo vocalists are particularly wonderful. The balance between vocal and instrumental forces is well kept and the recording is excellent in a warm acoustic, is full sounding and has a great presence. A very fine version and certainly comes well recommended.

If Holmboe is new to you perhaps the Symphonies and Concerto works are a good place to start. I believe him a composer with his own voice and one worthy of investigation.

Do check out the symphonies and concerti, though. As Maix mentioned, a composer definitely worth looking into.

Those are BY FAR the TOUGHEST Holmboe to digest. If you tackle these, everything else he wrote will be like chocolate-vanilla ice cream!

Dare I say that the chapter (by Bob Reilly) on Holmboe in "Surprised by Beauty", is particularly good.

I prefer the Third to the First, but Schmidt's Second and Fourth are gems among the more conservative symphonies of the period.

Tchaikovsky: Suite for Orchestra No. 1 [Sanderling]

A fine performance of this wonderfully tuneful and enjoyable work. The recording demonstrates the very effective scoring very clearly.

I'm like parsifal and hope for the best of it. :o  Maybe that I need that chocolate-vanilla ice  :P SCREAM afterwards

I just read this about the quartets:

If you like 20th century string quartetes that are modestly challenging to listen to these are very consistent .in quality and will please the connoiseur
