I must first have been aware of him with the enormously successful musical A Chorus Line (12 Tony nominations, winning nine of them).  But I found that A Ch. Line did not wear as well as (e.g.) West Side Story.  YMMV

Hey! Isn't West Side Story by Lenny Bernstein?

Aye, just so.  I was simply comparing two musicals of whose numbers I sustained repeat listenings in a concentrated period.

Ah, now I fully get it, thanks for clarifying.

I love the West Side Story suite. I might have watched the whole thing once, as a teenager on the Socialist Republic of Romania's State Television no less --- but I don't remember much of it, honestly. Some Portoricans fighting some Americans over a cool chick?

It's Romeo and Juliet with warring families replaced with ethnic gangs.

So I wasn't far off the mark, then.  :D

Mahler:  Symphony No. 9 [Walter/Columbia SO]

This is a measured, pensive but powerful and incisive reading of this work. The final movement is gloriously played.

Takemitsu: A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden

武満: 鳥は星形の庭に降りる

Ozawa's recording is by far the better one.  He and the Boston Symphony bring out the inner life and color of the music, while Alsop sounds muted and grey by comparison.

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 [Mravinsky]

This is a strong, powerful and studied performance. The first three movements are buoyant and assertive. The final movement is no less so in its own way given the nature and mood of the music and it finds quite a wonderful balance between passion and the pathetique. An intense and compelling performance.

Interesting comparison. Thank you.
