After several hearings it is clear to me, that Holbrooke is a composer worth to know. This CD holds all the ingredients of his music and style. The recording is superb, as is the performance.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Fabulous recording.

Closed off my listening day with the music of Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek, a great composer and well loved by me. Superb performance and State of the Art sound.

Purcell: The Fairy Queen, Acts 1-3 [Gardiner]

Refined and polished performances from Gardiner.

Purcell: The Fairy Queen, Acts 4 & 5 [Harnoncourt]

I find that the Harnoncourt performance has a far greater presence to it than that of Gardiner. Harnoncourt is a far more lively, earthy and raucous affair and it makes for a more exciting, absorbing and interesting listen. It just sounds more authentic to me.

I listened to the brief extracts I already have from the Gardiner recording and then the complete Act IV. I am not sure what my reservations were before, I enjoyed what I heard. As it is now been reissued as an inexpensive set I have gone ahead and ordered it.

Good for you. I hope that you enjoy the full set when you get it. I look forward to eventually reading your thoughts on Gardiner's version.

A MFP reissue of a 1954 Parlophone recording. The sound is extraordinary with no allowances necessary for the vintage.

The cover is a detail from "Hell" by Hieronymus Bosch.
Great cover. I heard Susskind conduct a very fine version of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite at the BBC studios in Maida Vale, London.

I presume that you have the Keilberth version which is the only one that I own. Did you enjoy the Matačić version?
My apologies, for not coming back to you! Yes,I'd need another listen,to really make my mind up;but I enjoyed it very much. The performance had a nice, earthy, rustic vigour to it. The singing is all very good, and the kind you, sort of expect, from that vintage period. Someone, obviously, had a bit of a field day with the sound effects, though. Not terribly subtle,I suppose;but it just seemed to add to the fun,as far as I was concerned. (The echo in the Wolf's Glen,is very echoey!! ;D) A rousing performance. I think it might just be my favourite, after Keilberth, now?!! Jochum coming next, because it was the first one I ever heard,as a teenager, via an Lp set in my local library.

I'm glad you are enjoying that Cpo cd (of the "Grasshopper" Violin Concerto, etc),Harry! :) I know I'm in the minority, but I,must admit,I love Holbrooke! Cpo have recorded a follow up (maybe, you know?) which will include his Symphony No 3 "Ships",Orchestral Variations on "The Girl I left Behind Me",and the tone poem "The Birds of Rhiannon". They've had it in the "can" for ages, and hopefully, they will eventually release it on cd!

I have had this set for a while. Putting it on again, after a while,I was wondering, knowing it's unfortunate history, whether I might soon switch it off? No,so! This opera may have a flawed libretto, but right from the Overture,it's full of lovely melodies and stirring arias and choruses. One good idea seems to follow on from another. Best of all (in a way) the music has a symphonic impetus to it which seems to sweep you along with it. I must admit,I can think of much more successful operas (in terms of stage performances) which seem far less consistent in terms of invention. Harnoncourt believes the opera has been "misunderstood. I have also seen the odd suggestion that it was "ahead of it's time". Be that as it may. I have been really impressed by the musical invention on display here. Judging by the positive reviews, and comments I've seen,in various places,on the internet;I'm not alone. The singing, choral contributions and the playing and conducting of the orchestra on this recording are first class. :) :) :)

His music is invigorating and really well written. I am waiting for this new CPO release with some eagerness

Bartók - Piano quartet in C minor

Many of you wouldn't think that this was written by Bartók, but rather by Brahms. A stunning early work. What a level of passion there is in here!!
