Hmmm. I thought that the accepted interpretation was that if a recording went out of copyright you are allowed to copy the original sound carrier, i.e., the 78 shellac discs, or whatever. You are not allowed to copy from a later embodiment, i.e. a CD release of the same material.

Anyway I'm not comfortable supporting this enterprise, especially since it seems like they're selling a rip of the EMI box set.

I don't know but I do know I've found PD labels ripping material from other labels' CDs. I'd say it's standard operating procedure. It's rare that a PD label will make the effort to acquire all the 78s and make fresh transfers.

Hahahahahaha! Can't help to laugh because I felt the same way about these works when I heard it. Even after listening twice I felt the same.

However I love most of his other piano works.

I do like his early piano works like the Four Études, Op. 4, but that's about it.

I have it all (except the Schumann) in individual boxes released at various times. I agree. There is nothing more colorful than a perfectly balanced performance by the best orchestra in the world. :)

Decided to listen to this disc in its entirety.

The thing I most enjoyed was the Ballet Suite.  Lively, witty music. My reaction to the fifth symphony was similar to my reaction to the forth. Enjoyable, but didn't make a strong impression on me. Impossible to put my finger on what was missing, maybe 'expressive intensity.' Perhaps a too-polite performance is part of it. Just a personal reaction, of course.

He is no slouch in Shostakovich too.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

The Festetics is my go-to set for Haydn quartets.

The last time I was on a Haydn kick I was alternating Festetics Quartet and Aeolian Quartet. Deeply satisfying.
