Etudes op 2 and op 5
Piers Lane

Between the 12 etudes here and the 12 in op 5, also on the disc, we get all 24 keys.

Some very fine piano musiic. I tried an experiment with them: first listened to the etude, then read the title. In 8 out of 10 cases I guessed the mood alright. Take that, Stravinsky:laugh:

The lullaby in the funeral march of the sonata alone makes this disc worth hearing.

Andrei Gavrilov is the best pianist I've ever heard live in a solo recital.

Very nice, but I'm afraid Stravinsky s'en fout complètement ... ;D

Good day, and happy Easter, Andrei:)

Bizet: Pearl Fishers [Dervaux]

Along with the wonderful arias that are very well presented here there is also adequate drama and tension in this fine performance.

Playing, now! Cd 1,of this set. The Markevitch is the best recording;but this one is in stereo;and you don't get the, intrusion,of a narrator! (Not that it bothers me!) This set has attracted, some criticism;but I think it's very enjoyable. Teresa Berganza;may be a bit old,as has been suggested (!) but I think she sounds lovely! :) It's nice to have some dialogue (as does the,Markevitch). This issue has a nice fat booklet and libretto.

Moi aussi je m'en fout completement de Stravinsky, sauf Petrushka que j'adore.  ;D

Google says June, 21 --- which sounds just about right to me.  :)

François Couperin

Premier Livre CD 3

Listening to a "Private Passions" podcast featuring the surgeon Roger Kneebone yesterday inspires me to investigate Couperin. The piece he chose for the programme was "Les Idees Heureuses" fascinating that this and the jazz of Charles Lloyd are not far apart.

Copland: Appalachian Spring [Ormandy]

I particularly like the orchestral writing in the Introduction to this work.

Just finished a run through of this set

The last work I listened to, the Schedrin, was one of only three concertos included here listed as "written for Rostropovich" which I liked, the others being (no surprise) the Prokofiev and Shostakovich. The Knaifel was good but is more a choral work in which the cello has a prominent role (and is the only instrument ) so it's not really a concerto The Milhaud and Honegger concertos were also good.

Now on the last CD of this set, Bruckner 9

I was just playing parts of that this week. The Jolivet is also good, but I needed a couple listens.
