Been on a classical Haydn kick lately, but I needed a palate cleanser this evening...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

George Dyson: Violin concerto.

Trust I am not being too controversial when I say decent British violin concertos are not plentiful. Perhaps this is down to exposure.
Case in point the Dyson concerto of which I didn't know of its existence up to last week. Unusually in four movements and only slightly let down by the last, a work I enjoyed very much. Lewis Foreman writes of violin concertos composed around the same time, that of Walton, Bax, and Moeran. So Dyson shares good company, and in Foreman's view a company Dyson shares as an equal, a sentiment I very much agree.

I have that as part of this double CD. Your observation applies equally well to the other three concertos.

Teleman: Something of an oboe extravaganza under the direction of Barshai.

Concerto in B flat for 3 oboes, 3 violins and continuo
Concerto in F minor for oboe and strings
Somewhat restricted sound quality [a mono recording]. The performances and interpretations are of their time but are fine.

Madiel  A Bach cantata twice in a week? At this rate I'll... still be rapidly overtaken by those going through a CD each day...

Perhaps this is CD 21 already. ;)

The Tomkins is very beautiful, especially the contribution of Red Byrd make this CD attractive

Haydn: Lira Concerti Nos. 1 & 3 [Ruf]

These are simple, straightforward works which are still full of charm and appeal and Haydanesque poise.

Yes, agree on the Red Byrd contribution. I have a small number of recordings, including that one, on which they feature.

György Kurtág: ... quasi una fantasia ..., op.27. Hermann Kretzschmar, Peter Eötvös, Ensemble Modern. Beautiful piece. I should explore Kurtág further.

It seems I need to add Shostakovich to the list of composers I can completely obsess over. I think the 14th Symphony broke me.

Listening to Shostakovich to go to bed seems particularly nuts, but it's what I'm about to do. Maybe Hamlet film music. Maybe Malagueña from the 14th because Petrenko makes it blistering. Maybe other things I scrounge from streaming...

Night.  :-\

Federico Maria Sardelli.

6 Sonate a Tre. (Trio Sonatas 1-6.)

Stefano Bruni, Giovanni Battista Scarpa, Violins.
Lorenzo Parravicini, Bettina Hoffmann, Cellos.
Paola Talamini, Organ.

Beautiful, extremely beautiful. Just sample the second movement of the Sonata I in B flat major, "Larghetto" and you will be sold stock and barrel.
This guy who composed it, is a genius, no more, no less.
State of the Art recording.
