Apart from the ghastly soprano, all is well.

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

I seem to have forgoten about this one for a while (Alnaes symphonies 1 and 2), but it's quite fun. It's melodies aren't as memorable as some, but it makes up for that with energy and enthusiasm. The recording and playing are excellent. Beautiful cover too...

O, dear yes, that one is already waiting for 2 years to be played by me. Thanks for reminding me Neal.

Very disappointing sound quality. The opening soundes so flat, quenched and dull that I had to check my speakers to see if there was something wrong.

It's a Hurwitzer CD from Hell. He mentions the subpar sonics and doesn't like the music either (except for the Adagio).

One case where he got it right. Avoid, unless you're really dying to get a recording of this symphony. Why oh why wasn't this left to Chandos to do?   >:(

Hoping to block out some time for one of Barenboims Bruckner 7s today.

Worth it getting the whole set? Decent price.

This was, probably, the first of the concerti which I came to know well (and I knew it fairly well even before we played it in Charlottesville). While I have in the years since found great affection for all the others, there is still a sunny athleticism, partly balanced by tender episodes, to this concerto which has me thinking it is probably the one I like best among the five.

Very cool!  For her show, Masha asked me to furnish environmental music for three of the rooms . . . and the Adagio from this recording was one of the elements for one of the "mix-tape" discs.

Oh, I think so, indeed.

Morning, Karl.
I've been getting into Giulini more and more the past few years, he brings some interesting insight into some scores. Took me a few listens for his Faure Requiem to click, but man it sure has lately.

Well, I bought it primarily for the Dvorak (one of my favorite symphonies). I heard samples accompanying the Hurwitzer review of the Warner box which compared Giulini's earlier EMI version with the DG: the EMI "has more vitality but is also more conventional less Giulini-esque" than the DG. It was the unconventional tempos of the DG that sold me...along with the superb brass detail (those horn trills! the trumpets in the coda...man, Chicago brass rules--don't tell Cleveland I said that! ;D ). The entire symphony is, I think (I haven't actually compared timings yet), much slower than any other version I own and Giulini finds some darkness in this sunny symphony's depths. Be aware though: for those allergic to slower tempos it might come across as a bit stodgy, especially the last movement. In other words, it's Giulini.

But I'm also glad to have his Mahler 9 on CD now (I've long had the LP) and I'm looking forward to the Schubert (4, 8 and 9) and Prokofiev Classical.

As everyone has been saying, I won't be buying this now. Thanks for taking one for the team! A shame the sound quality isn't good as the other releases from the same forces was quite good. :(

I somehow knew that sooner or later there would be a disc you wouldn't be buying.
