Anyway, the Real Chopin set was at 20€ on JPC a few months ago. One should still keep an eye on it ;)

I didn't listen to Respighi's Violin Sonata last night as I was too tired but I'm listening now. Absolutely gorgeous work.

Listening to Sinfonia (Symphony No. 3). Possibly the greatest Italian symphony ever composed? Could be especially since there aren't many Italians that were interested in the genre. Nevertheless, this is a great performance of the work. I haven't heard Noseda's performance (yet).

Beethoven - Sonatas 8 to 11 / Brautigam

Took a chance on the fortepiano sound with this cycle but I like this a lot.

Listening to A Celtic Symphony. Love Bantock's music. A must for any lover of Late-Romanticism.

It's been a long time since I heard that, and I will need to relisten. Currently my favorite Italian symphony is Sgambati's.

Also own this box and doing a second re-listen this weekend - some of the reviews that I've read state a 'slight' reverberant sound (the recordings were done in a church) but I'm not detecting much of that as a negative.  I'm listening to the standard CD recordings, but SACD is also available, so curious if there is much of a difference on the same set of speakers?  My old NAD receiver does not play SACD - now my Blu-ray player will but it's attached to a sound bar which is just not as good as my regular speakers - Dave :)

Continuing the discovery of the Vivaldi Sacred Naive boxset with Laudate Pueri / Sandrine Piau.

Great disk!

Arguably, there is no composer of sacred music, in the Catholic tradition, more invigorating and electrifying than Vivaldi. In his hands the worship is a true party. :)

I don't think I've even heard Sgambati's. What's it like, Brian?

Haydn!

Yes, Haydn and Monteverdi are at the same level as composers of sacred music, but for different reasons (at least to me).

Vivaldi's music appeals at a physical and rhythmical level as no other composer, IMHO.  :)

yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Back to José, the disc entire, but he's gonna have to help me wash and wax the car.  I've got to get this done before winter.

Some Mozart concertos, namely K271 and K466.  Predictably excellent.

I can only hope that the management at Sony will see fit to issue a box of all of Kraus' recordings for Columbia, so her take of all of Wolfie's concertos can be heard again.
