Another composer who died too young.

Indeed...and then, there are many kinds of death...

Actually, I took him as affirming your unfavorable rating!  8)

Really, Hmmmm, well maybe you are right Karl, in that case I have to modify my reaction
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

In memory of Lydia Mordkovitch. May she rest in peace.

Very sorry to learn of her passing.  In her memory, I'm listening to her very fine recording of the Moeran Violin Concerto:

Bach: Cantatas BWV 56, 82, 158, 84             Bach Collegium Japan/Suzuki

Pleasantly surprised. I am starting to understand why so many GMGers favor Suzuki's cantata cycle. The use of female sopranos is a delightful addition to the Bach cantata soundscape. Very much enjoyed Carolyn Sampson's voice in "I habe genung". The sound is of course crystal clear being a modern recording.  8)    The only drawback with BIS is that their recordings are on the expensive side (at least relatively speaking). Anybody planning to get the full Suzuki cycle when it is issued? I missed the train with the individual smaller box releases apart from the very last one.  :'(        I tend to favor the Harnoncour/Leonhardt recordings, but the Suzuki recording has created doubt in my mind. Wonderful performances!!

h/t to Ken B for tempting me into getting this set!

Good evening, GMGers!

Listening to Alfredo Casella's Serenata for clarinet, bassoon, trumpet,  violin and cello, op. 46.

[asin]B000024MZQ[/asin]

The work is better known in its orchestral version (op. 46a, missing the second menuetto movement), but this is also quite enjoyable...

You are not to listen to that set before I get mine, dammit, Peter the mooncat (or is it catfish..)!  8)
Do you know that there will be a complete box?
Of course, Suzuki isn't the only HIP cycle with sopranos.

Listening to Requiem. A fine performance from Gielen/Frankfurt RSO.
What do you think of the Aventures and Nouvelles Aventures? 0:)
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Not so good if you look at the asking price  >:( : 790 €, or 985 $ !!!!  :o

I've got volumes 1 and 2, and 5 is on the way. Let's hope they re-release volumes 3 & 4...  ::)

Thread duty:

All this Bach / Suzki talk has wheted my appetite, so I randomly chose a cantatas CD from this:

No. 22, 23 and 75...

So, the good news is that the box is expensive enough for me to not worry about getting a part of it because I'm not paying that much for it, and the bad news is that the box is expensive enough for me to not buy it.. Just as I figured earlier, BIS wouldn't price the single discs too cheaply, no matter the size of the box, so even if it drops to, say 5€ / disc for 75 discs it's not going to be an affordable set. I was hoping they'd reissue the individual sets, as they're not selling the complete Sibelius edition as a single set either.

Bach Cantatas w/ Suzuki - LOT of discussion of BIS's most recent release, i.e. the last 15 CDs in this tremendous project - I bought into the first 4 10 CD boxes when offered by BIS at bargain prices - just ordered the one below under current discussion - cost was $72 at MDT, added some additional items to soften the S/H 'across the pond' for me - Dave :)

Mahler: symphony no 8. Soloists, various choirs and Tonhalle, Zürich Orchestra under the expert hand of David Zinman. On RCA. Superb performance and recording.

Verdi : Il Trovatore. One of the most magnificent casts I've come across. Fom a Matinée broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera, February 1982. With Leontyne Price, Viorica Cortez, Giuseppe Giacomini and Louis Quilico. The latter, a French Canadian baritone of italian descent tears into the part of Count di Luna with staggering presence, ringing tones and a huge voice. He was for decades the house baritone of the Covent Garden Opera. Cortez, a romanian mezzo with a huge voice of great amplitude makes the scalp prick in all the scenes she sings in. She simply sizzles, both vocally and histrionically. Simionato has finally found her match. Giacomini is himself a tenor of the big, burly variety who brings to the role of Manrico tons of testosterone and ringing tones. The only element missing is a sense of caresse in Ah si, ben mio . Finally, the star of the show, Leontyne Price. At that stage of her career Price's voice was dark like a 90% chocolate piece, the tone covered, even occluded, the effort as apparent as if lifting weights to make it soar above the break. But in that area she is that rarest of birds, a true spinto with a gloriously free, phosphorescent tone of utmost beauty and carrying power. Since Leonora's tessitura brings her both to the depths and the heights of the range, hers cannot be said to be a benchmark for the role of Leonora. But for all its vocal faults, she thrills like few (including herself) have ever done. D'Amor sull'alli rosee is greeted by a frenzy from the audience. It is a showstopper if ever there was one.

Conlon directs with brio and the orchestra is excellent.

Few operas bring such a dose of adrenalin to the proceedings as Il Trovatore. This thrill-a-minute opera is rarely presented with such effulgent, dynamic, soaring, roaring verdianness as here.

Available at Berkshire Record Outlet at a very reasonable price.

I am happy with Gardiner.

Brian was right.

Re Trovatore.
I wonder if that was the same production I saw on the annual tour in 1977.  The cast was completely different:  Bergonzi, Scotto, Cornell MacNeill, Cossotto, Levine conducting.

Hmm, yes, I have been eyeing the "box" but my credit card shook its head fiercely. It is a bit on the expensive side. Besides, I wanted to sample Suzuki a bit before even considering such an huge investment. It will be one of those "buy it a few years from now" items.
I was considering changing my name to Mooncat so you are right in target!    :D :D
