Speaking of Marc-Andre Hamlin, I've posted three videos (on my blog) of him playing the B Minor with Liszt's manuscript streaming throughout.

Very interesting to see.

Ah yes, I remember listening to that years ago. If I recall correctly, it had a bit more wild abandonment than the Hyperion disc.

Why, so you did, dear fellow, so you did  0:)

Does make me want to revisit Argerich, which I remember liking, but to which I do not remember attending quite so closely (not her fault).
A very large contrast between the approaches as far as I recall - but both are certainly excellent. Will need to hear them both some fine autumn evening.  :)

New music to me - and so an extra pleasure.
"You overestimate my power of attraction," he told her. "No, I don't," she replied sharply, "and neither do you".

Hi Todd - I've not heard Zacharias in these performances but am a big MDG fan, so suspect the sound recording is excellent?  In checking Amazon, I noticed this 'inexpensive' EMI set which appears to be a compilation w/ different conductors - any comparative comments?  Thanks - Dave :)

The delicious energy with which this starts, suggests a mid-point between Hindemith and Mennin.

Good to see that it's still priced like a true BIS bargain - 6 CDs (361.5 minutes, as per Amazon) for the price of 5 CDs.  :-X

Oh, indeed!  Perhaps the only reason I own this is, I had a gift certificate for a specific site, and (mirabile dictu) this was among the relative paucity of classical recordings available there!

I had no idea this set had been reissued.  I had given up hope of never getting it for less than $500.00.

Thanks.

Yes I tried to tell the GMG community that almost a year ago, but you're the first I see listening to it.
He is a fine composer.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Aulis Sallinen's "Chamber Music" - actually works for string orchestra. New release.

"The Nocturnal Dances of Don Juanquijote" might be the most purely fun, joyful thing I've ever heard by Sallinen, a true dance suite with a solo cello part. "Cruselliana" pays homage to the great clarinetist-composer by adding a quintet of wind soloists to the string orchestra. This music spans decades - 1975-2009. So far everything I've heard has been a delight. This is looking to be an essential pickup for anybody who likes contemporary music.

I reviewed that Westerhoff CD for MusicWeb. "Very little is known about Christian Westerhoff except that his music is wonderful....the Symphony in E flat [has] some writing for trumpets and horns which sounds a lot like the early Schubert symphonies. The finale is again a highlight, and again foreshadows early Schubert."

Αdmittedly the two concertos are rather innocuous by comparison but the Symphony is a revelation

I wonder if Nik has listened!  It may be no less new (nor less delightful) to him than the Nielsen  8)
