Brahms: Symphony No. 1 played by the Berlin Philharmonic / Kempe....

This work has what is one one of my favourite openings for a symphony. I also love the last movement, particularly the horn lead in; haunting.

Very fine disc - beautifully played by the Parley of Instruments.

I only own two recordings with Melkus: Bach BWV 1043 and 1051. So I am not acquintained with his style. But I was surprised to read the quotation above. Does the content apply to the Biber recording too?
Yes, Melkus's playing is quite 'modern'; I'd compare it to (say) Menuhin's early recording of the Bach Sonatas & Partitas actually. In interpretive quality as well as in playing style. I do find his performance to be superb, but an alternative is essential (I recommend Daniel Sepec above all, but I'm not that much of an expert compared to some around here).

Bartók:
Bluebeard's Castle             Töpper/Fischer-Dieskau/Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin/Fricsay
Cantata Profana                    Krebs/Fischer-Dieskau/RIAS-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin/Fricsay

A very good "Bluebeard's Castle", but I definitely prefer the Sawallisch version sung in the original Hungarian (this one is sung in German).

Disc 1.  Not of Pletnev/Zacharias/Babayan quality, but certainly of Baglini/Pogorelich/Schiff quality.  Step aside old men, a young American woman is on the scene.

Listening to Great Sandy Island. Beautiful work.

Newly purchased on LP and near mint - surely I must have heard this Hanson #2 performance (from late 1967) on the radio previously :

Gerhardt and the NPO are completely sympathetic to the work, and surprisingly good sonics, but I'll take Schwartz's recording despite his languorous Andante (over a minute and a half more than Hanson's own recording).
