Vieuxtemps, Henri - Violin Concertos - up for a second listen and enjoying even more! :)  Dave

I told you Dave, these performances are far better as the Naxos recordings.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"Virtuoso Recorder Music" - Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet

Oh I might try to track that one down. I have just one CD from that ensemble in my collection which I like very much....

Haydn: Symphonies 86 & 87 / Harnoncourt....

I found this set of Paris Symphonies to be wonderfully strong performances, well paced and articulate. I think that these will become a highly favoured set of performances of these works for me.

As fine as the "Virtuso Recorder Music" album is, I used to have another on vinyl by them called "Baroque Recorder Music" which I really loved, and hope to find on cd.

Didn't realise they'd made so many (or any) albums on Channel.

Thank you for that one also.

Glad to know of this (and your impressions invited). I saw Baráti live in a recital last year - works for solo violin - and thought he was terrific.

--Bruce

I did not expect to like this (I hadn't even heard Baráti's playing before and since more famous names stumble in this work by means of either indifferent or diabetic readings my confidence wasn't high) but I enjoyed it enormously. Baráti seems to strike the right balance so that the work would not sound saccharine, but mellifluous as it should be, with an appropriate amount of spikiness to keep things interesting throughout. His virtuosity is obvious but effortlessly projected, never annoyingly to the fore. The orchestra is also very good in supporting him, as well as highlighting Korngold's fanciful orchestration and harmonies. The Korngold violin sonata was also excellent, perhaps the best/more convincing rendition I've heard so far. I'm definitely going to listen to Baráti's takes on Brahms' and Beethoven's violin sonatas next.

I was enthusiastic about this piece the first time I listened to it (sometime in my Wooster days).  Somehow, my ears "blacked out" on it for decades.  Now, my inaugural ardor for the work has been completely restored.

Funny thing, life . . . .

And a mighty fine rendition and recording this is, if I might add. Slain!  8)
