Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 from this set....

Harry

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Some Boccherini to combat the heat in my country. Granted he has a sunny character too.

Harry - been watching you posting these Phoenix 2-CD sets and finally took a look - same recordings as in my 10-disc Capriccio box below, which I greatly enjoy!  Dave :)

Симфония № 10 e-moll, соч. 93 [ Symphony № 10 in e minor, Opus 93 ] (1953)
Gürzenich Orchester Köln
Дмитрий Георгиевич  [ Dmitri Georgiyevich (Kitayenko) ]

Excellent.  For one thing, Дмитрий Георгиевич gives the opening Moderato ample breathing-space, which is for me almost critical;  the first movement here takes 26'14 (Максим Дмитриевич clocks at 27'20 — and exquisite, it is — where Ormandy makes an unholy rush of it at 22'04 . . . and Кирилл Петрович — I hope you're sitting down — 21'23).

Moscow Phil
Кирилл Петрович [ Kirill Petrovich (Kondrashin) ]

Recorded in 1973

The first movement whips readily into a sort of Mephisto Waltz.  It works that way, too, and it is impressive in its fashion;  but that truly ought to have been a red flag in the conductor's mind that, wherever we've come, it ain't Moderato.

And when the clarinets reprise their (what ought to be) lilting quavers . . . it isn't marked Allegro nervosamente, but that's how it sounds . . . .

Piano Concerto: A first listen to this work for me and I really enjoyed it. I found the music to be accessible, interesting and varied. Interestingly, I particularly enjoyed the orchestration which I thought was wonderful.

Violin Concerto: A first listen to this work also and I found it to be an intriguing work that held me captivated with its variety and invention.

Several new arrivals today:

Smetana, Bedrich - String Quartets w/ the Pavel Haas Quartet - some excellent reviews (attached) - only complaint is that the recording is under 50 minutes so another work could have been easily added?

Fauré & Franck - String Quartets w/ the Dante Quartet - also some great reviews (included in the PDF file) - been culling my collection and wanted a new version of the Franck and both Smetana quartets.  Dave :)

First listen.
Of the three violin concertos, the Third gives the best initial impression.

Biber: the Rosary sonatas for solo violin. Reinhard Goebel, Archiv Produktion. Slightly enervated, but the music's palpitations are echoed in the soloist's approach.

Rautavara: his nice, flowing, cinematic 8th Symphony. Osmo Vänskä, conductor. BIS records.

Tatiana Nikolayeva : Liszt B Minor Sonata

This music had not previously impressed me, but I suspected Letzbor might do a better job, and he has.
