Harry

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Brian

The horn concerto might be my favorite Penderecki piece...maybe. Who can choose?!

"Javert, though frightful, had nothing ignoble about him. Probity, sincerity, candor, conviction, the sense of duty, are things which may become hideous when wrongly directed; but which, even when hideous, remain grand."

More from Warner's wonderful complete Schwarzkopf recital box.

By 1968 Schwarzkopf's voice may have lost some of its silvery lightness, but it has taken on a creamy richness and the instrument remains as firm as ever, totally free of wobble or tarnish.

Here she and Szell are joined by Alfred Brendel on the piano for Ch'io mi scordi di te and Edith Peinemann for Morgen.

A lovely disc.

Schwarzkopf is pure chocolate ganache on that recording of the Strauss songs. . . and sometimes even German chocolate crème brûlée.

I just love that new Warner box set of her recitals to death.
Easier slayed than done. Is anyone shocked that I won?

Organ Works - CD 1

Simone Stella

At an irresistible price, made even more irresistible by Stella, although 12 CDs of similar organ music is quite a lot to swallow, for me.

Mozart: String Quintets, CD 3 K. 593 & K. 614...

These two are my favourite performances of the set.

But then, She is distracting.................. :)

Well, we all have our crosses to bear. . .

Salonen's LAPO incaranation of Kullervo has the most driving and heroic "Kullervo and His Sister" I've ever heard.

Its heroic, its epic, its Christmassy- and I love it.

Suitably appropriate music for any Christmas season.

Now:

Listening to Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra. The dilemma I have with RVW is that once I listen to one work it ends up spilling into another one and so forth, because the music is damn great. A composer who has helped me cope with some emotional times and has inspired me with each successive listen. One of a kind composer.

OK then +10  ;)

+ 10 is a nice start.

The sheen of the BPO horns and the blending of the strings on Karajan's EMI Pathetique is breathtaking.

Ab-so-LUTE-ly.

For me, RWV inspires feelings of nobility, beauty, and freedom.

He's certainly been a favorite of mine for years now.

A new acquisition. Listening to the Piano Concerto in F sharp minor, Op. 20 with Ashkenazy/Maazel. Scintillating performance.
