Hey now, I was at work without my headphones, craving some music.

Overboard? Perhaps, but I'll stand by my original comments.  :)

Well, to be honest, I find Ives an eye-opener. I've played a few of his pieces, which helps a lot. Lots of people have never heard of him.

+2.
Listened to that Ives, wonderful  0:)

Greatest American composition of the 20th Century might be too much, though - especially since Ives wrote other great stuff, too ;D

Some 'what the hell' February for me too. On first hearing Ligeti when I was 8 or so, I wondered if this could actually be considered music.... I gradually came to really like Atmospheres and the piano etudes, but feel like giving some more of his music a try now:

And..... WOW!!!!! This is incredible stuff! The textures in Lontano are so moving, as if screams are desperately trying to be heard, the harmony so close, structure so slowly moving... amazing!! Really enjoyed the Macabre too, a really interesting, exciting piece, with amazing instrumentation!! :D

About time you agree with me! Ligeti is my favorite late-20th Century composer. His music is so individual. It's instantly recognizable. He's into creating music that rises above experimentation unlike a lot of late-20th Century composers. There is a rhyme and reason to the music and he articulates his ideas so well. Incredible composer.
