Brahms 4th Symphony Levine/CSO.  Very good performance, decent sound.

I noticed a batch from Delius to Elgar that I've not put in my database, so some listening from there for a while, today
DVORÁK's Symphonic Poems  opp.107-111:  The Water Goblin, The Midday Witch, The Golden Spinning Wheel, The Wild Dove and A Hero's Song
Czech Philharmonic Orch.     Bohumil Gregor, cond.
and the collection from Dorati with the Detroit Symphony: Czech Suite, Prague Waltzes (real ear-worms there)
Polonaise, Polka and the Notturno op.40
more Elgar, Delius, Diamond and Eisler to follow
"Keep your hand on the throttle and your eye on the rail as you walk through life's pathway."

Listening to Martinu's Trio for flute, cello and piano. Delightful work! I felt like I needed some chamber music tonight. Martinu's music is always so refreshing.

Gold Knight

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart--Symphony No.35 in D Major, K.385 {"Haffner"}; Symphony No.40 in G Minor, K.550 and Symphony No.41 in C Major, K.551 {"Jupiter"}. All three works are crisply and precisely traversed by the George Szell led Cleveland Orchestra.
Gustav Mahler--Symphony No.6 in A Minor {"Tragic"} and Symphony No.9 in D Major, both tenderly performed by the New York Philharmonic under Maestro Bernstein.

The new erato

What little listening I've done the last couple of days have mainly been to a few discs from Hyperion's summer sale (primarily early music), a third listen to Holmboe's magnificent Metamorhosen, plus disc 2 of Kate Bush's Aerial album.

Now playing disc 2 from this:

Continuing my Atterberg traversal wih symphonies 1 & 4:

[asin]B0007ACVDW[/asin]

No 1 & 2 I find more traditionally romantic and not as interesting as nos 3 - 6 - no 1 has some beautiful moments though.

My ranking of he first 6 may be (based on the recent relisten)

3, 5, 6, 1, 2, 4.

Now disc 3 from this. What a powerful, original and haunting work this is. Mussorgsky clearly to me is the greatest genius in Russian romanticism. If only he had had his life in order, and written more. Though as a well organized apparatchnik, he probably would have written boring music.

A beautiful disc. Just a pity it's in Nimbus' now customary CD-R format.

5 works by Luigi Rossi, 3 by Domenico Mazzocchi, and 1 by Marc Antonio Pasqualini.

I guess it's a very long time before you come to the end of that USB stick.

For me this is one of the real outstanding solo Mozart records, it's hard to explain why in positive terms. It has something to do with the way he's so serious. There's storm and stress in there, but it's not immature teenager storming, sorry can't explain it better. The interpretation makes the music sound assertive, without being hectoring or agressive.
