Superb stuff, both musically and sonically, all of them.
There is no theory. You have only to listen. Pleasure is the law. — Claude Debussy

Martinu: Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano, and Timpani

A blast from my past collection, even pre-blog, and as confusing it is now as it was then, at least it is what I remember of that recording. Anyways a second listen after 3 years.

This turned out to be a reminder why HvK's Parsifal, despite undeniable gorgeousness, does not make my Top 5 among Parsifal recordings.
The violins sound great... almost great, namely artificial and the females engage in a vibrato orgy (Flowermaiden Sextet is quite hard on the ears) and Kundry isn't the last word.

What 5 would you choose ahead of it?

Interesting - I only have the piano concerto on the orchestral side. But I do enjoy his piano music. I think of it as that French, romantic sensualism, but with a modern twist. But the twist can be challenging at times.:)

I was just waiting for that question.  :D

1.) Kubelik

2.) Boulez

3.) Barenboim

4.) Knappertsbusch '62

5.) Kegel

Also contenders to land ahead of Karajan (although the latter is stronger in certain aspects of the work than each of these):

Thielemann, Goodall, Jaap van Zweden. Almost Levine/Bayreuth.

Yes that's a good description. And for the record I love his music, but it's somewhat confusing ;D

Starting off the day with The Mass of Thanksgiving by Monteverdi and his contemporaries, Andrew Parrott conducts The Taverner Consort:

I'd probably prefer a closer mic-ed recording, but once the ears adjust to the large basilica space, the sound is very engaging.  :)

Excellent Stephen Midgeley review via the link above.

Haven't played this one in ages!  Thanks to all who post here; I am most grateful for each of your contributions to this community of music-lovers!  Very thankful for this site as well.

Cheers! :)

An unknown composer to most of us, but in my view well worth listening to. This guy has some musical surprised in his sleeve, especially in the solo concertos.
