Vivaldi: Concerto RV 93 for 2 Violins, Lute and basso....

Fine playing but once again on this disc we have a recording imbalance, this time in the opening movement between the lute and basso with the lute being sometimes overwhelmed.

Thanks for the heads up. :) I guess Biondi is hard act to follow.....

This is why I didn't buy the complete Brilliant set, just do some cherry picking... 8)

Q

Absolutely on Biondi.
There is fine playing overall on the CD but one cannot but feel a little disappointed with the engineering coupled with a dry acoustic. This one could have been a real winner.
Your comments are also interesting regarding the set. Do you have many of them? I have a number of these Guglielmo CDs on my List but I am now reluctant to buy any more. Do you have any suggestions as to what to avoid?

Madiel

Barber, Souvenirs (orchestral ballet version). First listen.

Bax: Northern Ballad....

A fine work with sweeping strings, interesting harmonies and counterpoints.

Nielsen, Symphony No.2 ("The Four Temperaments")

First listen since I purchased (though I did listen on Spotify when deciding that Nielsen was going on the shopping list). Really great music. The 'andante malincolico' particularly grabbed me, but really the whole thing is first class.

A really nice recording of interesting repertoire by lesser known Neapolitan composer Nicola Porpora.
The only draw back is that the just three motets by Porpora and two concertos by Vivaldi serve as fillers (in nice performances though..)
More Nicola Porpora is definitely on the to-do-list!  :)

I haven't had a real dud sofar, though the cello concertos are a bit rough around the edges. And I agree that the recording quality is generally rather variable, even within a single recording or set....  As regarding to any pointers - I have been essentially following your lead!  :)
Till now I've found the oboe concertos set and the Concerti da Camera to be the most successful.

That is also a recent purchase of mine. There have been favourable and unfavourable reviews on this set so I had hesitated myself. However I can only reiterate that I found it to be a wonderful set with invigorating and exciting performances  :)

Follow at your own risk my friend

Thank you for your comments. My disappointment was more that I had been very pleased with all of my other purchases with these forces so far and I had not been expecting technical issues. My next scheduled purchase in this set is the one of Vivaldi's Cello Sonatas. I may go ahead with that one and see how I get on with it.

Arrived today. Can't take anymore Grofe;although the Telarc was fun! I like these Bocklin paintings for some reason. Possibly why I'm stuck with all those Raff Tudor cds. There's always some mug who'll buy a cd because of a painting! Not me,of course! ::) ;D  I like this one. I like Birgit Remmert's singing. I haven't heard her before. I have Ziman's 6th & 7th. I like the performances & the sound quality is very clear & detailed. I like his performances of 6 & 7. Others may (willl) disagree! The cds have both cds ! & 2 on the same sprocket (or whatever you call it?) which is a little longer than usual to accomodate the additional cd. I actually prefer this arrangement. Others may disagree?
