Britten: Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge Op. 10....

Wonderfully strong music overall and a strong set of very varied variations [if you get my meaning]. This was a fine performance too.

Heinrich Schiff plays Bach's 6th site. Lithe, dancing, noble and nuanced, not one iota of the music's expressiveness is lost. The articulation and rubato are so natural that it feels like a spontaneous outpouring. The cello sounds fabulous.

From the 150th Anniversary Delius collection, the only recording ever made of Koanga, his most famous opera (1897), the first ever to feature a cast of mostly Black characters (before Treemonisha and of course Porgy and Bess, who came much later). Traditional negro songs are used throughout, mostly heard from the chorus.

A most beautiful work, with a wonderfully rich orchestral score. The well-known interlude La Calinda is culled from Koanga.

The new erato

This is beautiful, with wide open spaces, fully worthy of Copland in his similar populist mode:

Johann Abraham Peter Schulz - Largo [a solo piece].
Johann Julius Sontag von Holt Sombach - Adagio [a truly magnificent modern piece - with string quartet - written in a older style]

This Mirare boxset arrived today just before Christmas!  :)

Already listened to the Bach Christmas Cantatas disc*. Awesome! Now listening to the Bach/Haendel disc**. Sounds great too. Spatial distortion is high, but otherwise the sound is very enjoyable. Ricercar Consort rules! I bought this set for the Weckmann Conjuratio which cost separatately only a couple of euros less so this boxset was a great deal, 16.09 euros delivered for 3 wonderful discs. Fantastic ending for the classical purchases this year!

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

My favourite Bach cello set on a 'modern' instrument... rest in peace, mr. Schiff. :(

It is very good. Is Wieland Kuijken's recording on a modern instrument? That would probably be my top pick on a cello with a spike.
