Kontrapunctus

Rakowski certainly puts the musicians through their paces in his propulsive, jazz-inflected music. Superb sound, particularly in the Piano Concerto.

Featured works are L'histoire de Babar and La Voix humaine.
Rather a contrast.

From "The Real Chopin" set:

Tatiana Shebanova is one of the main pillars of the set, a really excellent Chopin interpreter to my ears.
She recorded a complete Chopin edition for the Polish label DUX (MusicWeb review)

I agree. Very intimate performances, although maybe a bit subdued for some people.

After La Voix humaine, an excursion to Montserrat via the L'oiseau Lyre Medieval set

(Amazon doesn't seem to have a better image)
Then a return to Poulenc, chansons et melodies, mostly for chorus, CD 20 of the EMI set
A bit to my surprise, I'm enjoying Poulenc's vocal music most, far more than I usually like "art songs". In a way that is a good thing, since the vocal works, including the works for theater, account for half his output (going by the number of CDs).
And to close out the night, another CD from the L'OL set

What a very nice coincidence  8)

Gorecki: Symphony No. 3 [Altinoglu]....

This is such a wonderful work. I absolutely agree on the Kilanowicz/Wit version. I think that it really gets to the essence of the work. I have always preferred it over the Upshaw/Zinman.

The Altinoglu version is a very fine performance indeed. It is laden with powerful emotion both vocally and instrumentally yet nothing is overdone. Ingrid Perruche sings hauntingly. She sounds a little heavier vocally than Kilanowicz but that in itself brings something different to the performance.

Very nice indeed, aligreto. 8) Gorecki's Symphony No. 3, "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs" is such a magnificent piece of music, but it mustn't be rushed and now that I understand this piece much better than I did when I first heard it, I vastly prefer the Poles here and the Kilanowicz/Wit hit all the right chords with me from the beginning. I feel that the Upshaw/Zinman is a bit too sugary and superficial to me now. I'm currently looking at some other performances.

Now more Gorecki from Antoni Wit:

Beatus Vir, Op. 38
Symphony No. 2, "Kopernican," Op. 31

A winning disc all-around. Powerful performances.

This is a superb album, and frankly both better and significantly more interesting than the Harty set on Hyperion:

Superb sound, and very fine music, Mendelssohnian in style and IMO on the level of the Mendelssohn quartets. Everything I've heard by Stanford has impressed me, I have about 5 or 6 albums worth. The 2 albums of songs on Hyoperion are very fine

I am happy to hear that my friend. Stanford has been a favourite of mine since I encountered the Symphonies on the label Chandos. In that time, many years ago, he was seen as a second rate composer, but for me he was always a creative and interesting composer.
