Dug this performance of No. 1 so much I might just have to listen to 2-6. But I've always loved Musica Florea and their work in the Music from 18th Century Prague series (among other discs).

Thanks for bringing this recording to my attention, Brian:)

I had no idea this group recorded the Brandenburg Concertos.  Way cool.

Noted, Andre;)

Many thanks for your opinion here.

I hold the Cafe Zimmermann set in high esteem.

Added to the list!  I have been looking at Lotter & the Hofkappelle Munchen's set:

A Que favorite!  Anyone else have opinions on this one, Musica Florea's version, or another?  Thanks in advance.  :)

While I wait for Arcadi Volodos' new Brahms disc to arrive, I kind of wanted something else to whet the aural appetite.  I'd previously streamed Alessio Bax's Mozart and Mussorgsky/Scriabin offerings via Amazon, and both are superb, with fantastically nuanced playing.  But streaming always sounds sub-par, and I wanted to hear proper 16-bit.  This is Bax's strongest disc yet.  Scale and weight are added to his arsenal, and his command of the pieces is absolute.  The Ballades at least equal the best I've heard before.  This is one of the best single Brahms discs I've heard in years.  Now to hear if Volodos does one better.

Charming music.

Listening now. Actually this music is more than charming, and deserves to be placed alongside the better known works of the period.  But I concur in Harry's overall verdict.  I listened to Volume III last night, and it is the equal at least of Volume I. (Volume II is en route to me across the Atlantic.)

Thanks Jeffrey for the Gade Chamber Works recommendations - but for those starting to consider these compositions, there are some alternatives - above I've inserted the 2 CDs that I own of most of the compositions of the 3-volume set - missing are the Quartet works which I would like to obtain. Now, I have not done any comparative listening, so cannot make a suggestion on what to purchase - own about 8 Gade CDs (4 are his Symphonies w/ Hogwood).  Really nice to see more interest in this composer.  Dave :)

Delightful cd.  These melodies contain La Fontaine fables put into music.  The velvet voice of Tassis Chritoyannos is wonderful in this repertoire.  His perfect diction and his sense of nuances match the texts perfectly.  In this election period, I cant help quoting Le corbeau et le renard

Next I will look for some excerpts of his opera Jocelyn, if they exist.

Thanks for the review (from your website), Harry. I've circled around this composer and the Da Capo discs for a couple of years. I'll put this on my radar, looking for a good deal  ;).

Cheers !

Your welcome André, I hope to hear in due time when you have the CD'S what you think of them.
Paul von Klenau is a very interesting composer. I have a few discs with his music lined up for listening soon.
Thank you for reading this review on my blog :)

I also have the MDG recordings which are actually very good. But the CPO's are a treat in themselves. This ensemble brought the music by Gade on an even higher level. Just sample them.

I am happy that you took an interest to Gade's chamber music. He is always a bit downgraded by many, which he really does not deserve!

Indeed... :) And it holds up after repeated listening.

It was Gordo's recommendation that lead me to it BTW.
