A new acquisiton:

So far, just finshing Asie from Ravel's Shéhérazade, and it is quite wonderful, thanks both to Mme. Karg's exquisite singing and Mr. Afkham's handling of the orchestra. Top-notch IMHO.  :)

What do people think of this?

Well played, sometimes perhaps a bit too forceful, with some willful/idiosyncratic touches here and there that will not please literalists.  Superb sound.  The alternating presentation (Scherzo, Ballade, Scherzo, etc) breaks up the music nicely.  Not my favorite examples of either the Scherzi or Ballades, but also far from my least favorite.

Autumn Leaves

Recent listening:

Shostakovich: Symphony #7 In C, Op. 60, "Leningrad" - Jansons/St. Petersburg SO

Great version of the work - Nothing special perhaps but I have no complaints. :)

Prokofiev: Piano Concerto #3 In C, Op. 26 - Ashkenazy/Previn/LSO
Prokofiev: Sinfonia Concertante For Cello & Orchestra, Op. 125 - Harrell/Ashkenazy/Royal PO

Prokofiev's Concertos are possibly the best I have heard in my exploration of Classical Music so far - Everything is tuneful and original with not too much (tiresome) virtuoso wank.

Cheers.

The idiosyncrasies were fun but I think probably work better in the Scherzi than the Ballades. High drama, not a lot of depth. I was wondering if I was missing something. (Far from my least favourites either.)

Andrzej Pikul's recording of the Second Year of Pilgrimage and the Two Legends.  Excellent playing overall, with slightly broad tempi in some cases, and maybe a dodgy passage or two in the Dante Sonata.  However, the sound quality of this recording is magnificent, making it hard not to listen intently.

Good day, North Star!

My question for Que as well.  ;)

Wondering about those "decay issues" that the amazon reviewer points to in his review.

Looks like a splendid release, though!
Wise words from Que:

Never waste a good reason for a purchase....  ;)

2nd run:

[asin]B001GHQ708[/asin]
A cleverly composed programme of Early & Baroque arias dedicated to the Holy Virgin from South Germany, the Habsburgian Empire and Italy.
The list of composers includes familiar as well as unfamiliar names.

Wonderful recital in beautiful performances. Recommended.  :)

Still a bargain (€4) at jpc.de......

Thanks for continually playing this disc - and heaping praise on it as well, Que:laugh:

Looks impossible to resist.  ;)

One of the few Margaret Price album I did not owned

[asin]B004WNIE4U[/asin]

A marvelous artist gone much too soon.  Endless breath unbreakable legato, a voice that is so clear and pure, powerful yet delicate.  I have to revisit her cds: Strauss, Brahms and french/spanish melodies.

A remarkable voice indeed.

Chopin's Ballade No. 4 via Maria Tipo (studio). I have to say, a much better and less intrusive use of idiosyncratic rubato/phrasing, and a performance that ends up deeply moving and engaging. Would be nice to know how people do that.

Another new acquisition:

Philippe Biancioni's playing is right up my alley, and Estampes and Images are among my favourite Debussy piano works (nay, among my favourite piano pieces ever). What else can I ask for?  :)

A little bit, yes.  The odd thing (perhaps) being that my introduction to the Adagio was (probably) the Kremerata Baltica arrangement, which was possibly the best possible entrée, for me.  Anyway, this movement has sunk its hooks into me but good.

Indeed Karl, a very fine piece of writing.

LKB

Currently l have Brahms' Sym. No. 4 in my head, having transitioned from Bruckner 5, which morphed out of Bruckner 4, which intruded upon Mahler's 10th.

Sort of how it guess with me, unless I'm studying something specific.

What's really fun is when two different works start between my ears simultaneously...  ???
