Since I am struggling with my health...

Having experienced one ambulance ride, two brief hospital stays and a couple of outpatient visits to five different facilities this year, l am molto simpatico. Good luck to you!  8)

A recent arrival featuring James Levine recorded live with the Munich PO.
The disc includes what is my first exposure to Harbison's music - if this 3rd Symphony is anything to go by, further investigation is required.

This set comprises the non orchestral works recorded by Hannsler Classics: music for flute, for clarinet,  the viola sonata, the cello sonata, the 20 chansons bretonnes for cello and piano, the oboe sonata, the bassoon sonata. It also features 3 discs of piano music.

I listened to disc 5, devoted to works for solo piano: the 4 sonatines, the piano pieces from the 2 Album de Lilian opuses and the Chansons et marines, a set of 12 short pieces. It is a cleverly arranged program, where variety is borne out as much from the alternance of the pieces (the 4 sonatinas are presented as interludes between the other pieces) as from the individual moods evoked in the pieces. The 2 Lilian albums were reflections of Koechlin's infatuation with Hollywood movies from the 30s. The Lilian of the title is actress Lilian Harvey, who was also featured in the composers' Seven Stars symphony.

All told, a very rewarding disc, thoughtfully presented and beautifully interpreted by pianist and Koechlin enthusiast  Michael Korstick. Liner notes are a model of the genre.

But the solo playing on this one is special.  Robert Maxham in Fanfare says "should set a standard for the next several generations in the way David Oistrakh's did for the last several."  Very high praise indeed.

I'm less satisfied with how the orchestra is captured.

This one was hard to find on Tidal.  It's not listed by composers or artists.  I finally found it by searching on the title of the Gubaidalina work.

To the bolded text, a shame. I'll probably never listen to the performance because of this, but it's not like I don't already have my favorites in this masterpiece.

Now playing La méditation de Purun Bhagat, Op.159 from this set:

Madiel

Dvorka c.1876 (though in some cases this dating is a bit uncertain)

2 Minuets for piano, B.58 (Poroshina)
4 Choruses, B.59 (Canticorum Iubilo)
Moravian Duets (2nd set), B.60 (Prague Singers)
Evening Songs, B.61 (partial, a couple of different singers, and for some reason the streaming service with the one complete version doesn't make it available in my country)
Moravian Duets (3rd set), B.62 (Prague Singers)
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

I prefer Mutter/Gergiev on DG for the Gubaidulina.

Revisiting for the first time in quite a few years. My Liszt collection, such as it is, is rarely on my radar.

Sunleif Rasmussen: Symphony no.2 /Storgårds etc./ Dacapo CD

... based on old Nordic mythology. A bit like "updated Jon Leifs, at times with a hint of Gorecki´s 2nd".
Pretty accessible, it seems.

I gotta say I would take this D959 over Zimerman's pretty easily.

Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord

I am still listening to the Sonatas for violin and harpsichord, since in the last few months I have slightly abandoned music to make room for other interests. Wonderful music !
